Who is Aziz N’Diaye?

aziz ndiayeMontlake Madness has been hearing some buzz about a gentleman named Aziz N’Diaye, a 7’1″ Senegalese baller about to start his second season at the College of Southern Idaho. Read about him and his team in the CSI media guide (from last season) here.

(Updated, 7:30 AM) Thanks to one of our readers, “Paul,” for pointing out that N’Diaye may miss the entire 2009/10 season with a torn ACL that required surgery in June. Here’s a link to a post about that.

I’ve seen reports ranging from UW offering N’Diaye a scholarship (for 2010) to this buzz being part of the incredibly intense recruiting talk surrounding Josh Smith. So, it may be worth listening to, and may not amount to much at all.

N’Diaye started 25 games for the Golden Eagles last season, averaging 8.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. He shot 55% from the field (but only 38% from the line), and blocked more than two shots per contest (good for second in the Scenic West Athletic Conference). Check out more stats here.

The College of Southern Idaho’s biggest distinction is that the program was started in the 1960s by coaching legend Eddie Sutton, who’s gone on to three Final Fours and more than 800 wins.

Since none of this buzz about N’Diaye has come directly from the source, I’m going to assume that he is one of the bigs we’re targeting for 2010 in the event Josh Smith chooses UCLA. Beyond that, you’ll hear it when I hear it.

Thanks for coming!

OK, now I am starting to get nervous about Josh Smith. The huskies really need Josh or Terrence Jones to commit and I would love to see both of them come together. If the huskies are making back-up plans for a jc big man who didnt even average 10 points per game because of the potential to lose smith this is not good. I hope Josh Smith stays home. He will be remembered in Seattle always as the guy who stayed home to help the hometown team.

Thanks for the update, didn’t know about the ACL. I believe we know about the kid but that’s it. Josh and Terrence know that we want them. I think as of now it is a rumor to steer kids one way but not to UW. We are on Pelle and Chol too, doubt if we want to lose them. Other schools are probably telling those kids, “Look UW is going a different direction.” Love the internet but easy to stir the pot.

Any chance Aziz is related to the former Storm player, Astou N’diaye? She now coaches at Utah State and had a sister who played too. Her triplets aren’t old enough for college yet since they were born in 2003 and she played 4 more years!
