UW Lineup Scenarios

WABB2

By Craig Yamada, Editor-In-Chief

There have been several requests to explore the line up shake ups for the upcoming 2010-11 season for UW. And in the spirit of that ESPN touch screen scenario TV, we have created our own to show our UW starting line-up possibilities. Granted these are based on opinion and a lot of assumptions for certain players, but we would love to hear what everyone else has in mind to start the season.

The beauty of the squad we are fielding this year is that we are not subject to the same starting five each game. We have the personnel to match up to any team that we may play against. Whether they are big (USC/WVU), or play small ball (Oregon/Marquette), or they play an annoying match up zone that dares us to knock down threes (OSU/ASU), we are ready.

Starting the Season

If you stuck a gun to my head and I had to decide on a lineup today, I would go with the following given the experience these five have over the rest of the team:

Teams to use against: Arizona and WSU

RegularLineUp

We all know that MBA, Holiday and IT are likely going to be staples for the starting lineup any given night. The PG spot is still up for debate but I’m 90% sure Romar will roll the dice with Gaddy out of the gates. Venoy will be ready off the bench should Gaddy slip. And as Griffin mentioned earlier, Gant should get an early look to slide into the four spot to open the season. Gant had a rough go about last year and seemed distracted. I am willing to bet that he regains his form and plays like he did circa freshman year.

Small Ball

Several teams in the Pac 10 are going to be quick and will run the ball up down the floor in transition. To counter, we must be prepared with our own quick lineup:

Teams to use against: Oregon, Cal, and Stanford

DreamLineUp

Some of you may think I am crazy for moving Holiday down to the 4 spot, but we all know that Holiday has the potential to be a poor man’s version of Q-Pon if he can get his shot together. Q-Pon played predominantly on the elbows of the key this year and as well around the perimeter. He did make the occasional post-up which then resulted in a face up jumper.  With this lineup, Romar could do a spread offense with MBA cemented in the post. Our wings would have free reign to score from beyond the arc as Gaddy penetrates and kicks. Mr. Ross, this is your time to shine.

Playing Big

Having the size to compete with lengthy teams was not a luxury we were afforded last year. With losses to teams like Georgetown, USC, and West Virginia made it frustrating to watch as a player or fan. We now have the size to combat the bigger teams.

Teams to use against: UCLA and USC

BigLineUp

With this line up, we will have what will be coined as “the block party” as Griffin stated in an earlier article. Nothing but brute force in the post and rebounding for opposing teams to play against. Ross and Holiday will be able to lock down the scorers and IT can get into the passing lanes.

Zone Busters

Given the emergence of the matchup zone deployed by Herb Sendek and ASU this year, a zone busting lineup could force teams to converge back into a man to man. How do you do that? Simple. Drive and kick to the open man on the arc.

Teams to use against: Oregon State and ASU

3ptLineup

This lineup is not very likely, but having a three pronged attack from the arc would definitely cause defenses to collapse. If IT can find a seem through the defense, Ross and Wilcox will be waiting in the wings for the open J.

All for now. What are your starting line ups? Thanks for coming!

Given the amount of respect most of us have for Romar’s talent for player development, I am hesitant to pencil in Terrence Ross (or any newcomer to a crowded position) as a starter until he proves he belongs. I know he looks great, but Suggs and Wilcox won’t be easy to beat for playing time. The battle for PT among the guards will be intense. I won’t be surprised if the top shooter among that group forces himself onto the court. Suggs has proven he can do it, Wilcox is rumored to be even better, and Ross is highly rated as a shooter…To me that is the biggest battle. PG will be the same as last year unless something drastic happens with Overton or Gaddy. MBA, IT and Holiday will start. That last spot will be interesting. Matchups, needs and game time strategy will determine a lot, but part of me hopes that someone steps up so much that the last starter spot is never in doubt. I personally hope it is Terrence Ross. He has a lot of hype and expectation surrounding him. If he can step in a prove he should start right away it could make his time here at UW easier than it has been for Gaddy so far.

I think we all hope T Ross can win that battle just for the SWAG of having him in the starting line up. I agree with you though GrantUW… its going to be a tough battle for PT. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ross implanted in the starting rotation by years end if he can play as advertise.

I agree with playing big against UCLA except for the fact that big man Josh Smith is too fat and out of shape and won’t be able to run if we’re small. I am excited to see big Aziz at work but I think running Gant in there won’t be bad either. I am using this comment to call out Josh Smith since he is going to eat himself out of college and not to take anything away from your lineup Craig.

Good analysis Craig. We could use you on “Talkin’ Hoops”. One more line-up that I would like to interject is the defensive hammer squad, when it’s time to go with the top in your face pressure guys. For that I’d go with Venoy and Isaiah at the guards, Holiday on the wing, Matthew at the 4 and Aziz at the 5. Very scary line-up to try to pass, dribble or with.

the one unmentioned line-up i like includes Breshers with MBA upfront, Holiday, IT and Gaddy at guards. I think Breshers has better all-around skills than Gant (especially if Breshers gets in shape), plus i think he provides necessary heft inside to keep us strong down low. other line-up combos are interesting, but i think Breshers may be able to solidify final spot and force TRoss, Aziz and crew to come off the bench.

You have Antoine Hosley listed as a reserve…..
Did I miss something? Did he commit to UW?

    Go Dawgs!

  7. craiger’s avatar

Antoine Hosley will be walking on to the UW team. Scout was the first to report it: http://washington.scout.com/2/981719.html

If you can remember, Antoine Hosley played alongside Terrence Jones at Jefferson. I have seen his highlights and he does remind me of a Will Conroy type player. He is ready work to earn his spot, but this could be a great pick up for the Dub: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1i540pqANo

Why is Terrance Ross better than CJ Wilcox already? You guys are still reading into hype way too much.

  9. Venoying’s avatar

These line ups need more Overton!!!! He will be a senior and will destroy Gaddy, even though he might not start he will play way more minutes!

  10. Paul’s avatar

I’m confused by the Ross vs. Wilcox assumptions also. All I hear is accolades for not just Wilcox’s shooting, but his overall game…and then everyone seems to assume Ross will be more of an impact player.

I’m not disagreeing because I’ve seen neither of them play, but am curious why it is assumed Ross will be ahead of Wilcox. Did I miss something?

  11. Jim Basnight’s avatar

Good question about Ross and Wilcox. Ryan Appleby said on “Talkin’ Hoops last Monday that his “Educated guess” is that Ross will back up IT, while Wilcox and Suggs will back up Holiday at the three, depending on who has the hot hand and defends better.

This Monday night we’ll be talking Tacoma hoops with Jason McCleary and NoCal hoops with AW Prince. Prince knows all of the guys on the Drew Gooden Soldiers very well, having seen most of them play since middle school.

That AAU squad includes UW 2011 recruits Jabari Brown, Kyle Wiltjer, Kiwi Gardner, 2012 recruits Dominic Artis, Brandon Ashley and a number of other potential Pac-10 kids.

My take on Ross and Wilcox is that Ross has the better overall game, but that Wilcox is the best stand alone shooter. C.J. needs to work on shooting on the run, but is the top catch and shoot guy on the team. Suggs is also worth mentioning because of his experience.

Nothing is set though, as practice will decide these rotations and anyone (hopefully including Abdul Gaddy) can work on their game enough to change any perceptions that the staff may have at this point.

I’m not saying that Wilcox couldn’t blow up and start this year, but the good news is that Ross is really good and that there should be quite a battle for minutes between those three, which ultimately benefits the UW team and everyone’s work ethic.

One more note about “Talkin’ Hoops”. Lenny Wilkens will be our guest on Monday July 19th.

    Thanks Jim.

    Jim,

That makes no sense at all… why would CJ Wilcox backup Holiday when Ross is a better athlete and better all around player? It makes sense that CJ would back up IT. CJ appears to be SG all the way. Why are they trying to make him a SF?

  15. craiger’s avatar

Probably because CJ has been rumored to be the second quickest defender to close out his man (second to Holiday). In reality… the 2/3 positions are interchangeable. They essentially will both be wing spots.

  16. Venoying’s avatar

I agree with Craiger, Romar plays with 1 point guard and a combination of wings and forwards. Suggs, Simmons, Wilcox, Ross, and Holiday all play the wing position it only depends on whether we need a 3 point specialist (suggs/wilcox) or defense (holiday/maybe simmons) maybe ross will have the defense and shooting ability who knows.

First few games of the season it will be Overton, IT, Holiday, Gant, MBA. Since Overton is a senior it will be his position to lose. If he can’t be the same sort of spark plug guy that he has been, then Gaddy will take over. If we are struggling to score points, then Gant is the first to get pulled and will be replaced w/ Suggs/Wilcox/Ross I’ve only seen Suggs play so I can’t make a judgment call on who get more minutes.

  17. Jim Basnight’s avatar

    Folks,
First I was quoting Appleby. Please re-read my post. Second, that is more than a rumor about C.J. ability to close on shooters. Romar said that he was second quickest after Holiday. That said, in my opinion a line-up of Isaiah, Ross and Justin at the guard spots could be really good too.

  18. craiger’s avatar

Going to have to go with Mr. Basnight on this one. Granted I assessed the lineups on this article based on pure speculation and hype. But after watching more footage of Terrence Ross, I am even more confident he will be first in the pecking order off the bench: http://www.vimeo.com/8092812

T-Ross has the game to play the 2 or 3 spot. Athletically, he might be the most gifted player on the team. He can rebound, he follows up missed buckets like Holiday and Qpon did last year, and he has a quick and smooth release from long range. Bottom line, this kid has all the tools. While he probably wont start at the beginning of the year, I think he will get his shot in the starting rotation by late season this year.

CJ will remain my best guess as the best shooter on the team given everything I have heard thus far, but Ross is a close second. CJ will probably get win the PT battle against suggs if he shoots and defends as advertised. But Ross will have more versatility in the end in my opinion.

The lineup Venoying suggests makes more sense to me. It is balanced, experienced and mature. There will be plenty of talent sitting on the bench, regardless of who plays. It is nice to look over and think “Oh well, I’ll get my chance next year”. This lineup proves it.

I also like this one, for going small: Overton, IT, Gaddy, Holiday, and MBA. I know that is crazy small, but it isn’t that different than Conroy, Robinson, Roy, Jones and Jensen. That team destroyed people. I also like Jim’s suggestion: Overton, IT, Holiday, MBA and Aziz would be really fun to watch. I remember watching the Huskies destroy the Ducks so badly that the fans were routing for the Ducks to score, just so that we could sit down at the beginning of the game. I this lineup could do that to a team.

Hopefully though, we will get a big enough lead on teams to experiment with bigger lineups. I think it won’t be needed against many of our opponents, but we’ll need to go big when the tournament starts.
