sad huskyEverything I have to say about the Dawgs this morning would be repetitive. What more can be said about such a disappointing weekend?

I’m certainly not giving up — not with the team only 2 1/2 games back in such an inconsistent league. But, I’ve leveled all of the criticisms I have for right now, and there’s officially nothing the Huskies can do over this four-game homestand to convince me they’re capable of doing anything at all outside of Hec Ed.

February 11th at Cal is the next time my mind will be open to the idea that the Huskies can possibly win a game on the road. Until then, I’m guessing we’ll go 6-5 the rest of the way, lose our first game in the Pac-10 Tournament (since it’s not in our building) and hope on March 14th that the NIT or CBI comes calling.

I am, however, excited to see what Coach has to say during his press conference later today. Will there be a plan to change the team’s fortunes? A change in the lineup or on-court strategy? Looking forward to hearing what Coach has in mind.

***

For me, this was the weekend when I started to come to terms with the fact that March Madness might be pretty quiet around our way.

I really do enjoy having someone to root for in the Tournament, and it got me wondering, how do other diehard Dawg fans tend to root if the Huskies don’t make the Tournament, or after they’ve been eliminated.

Me? I’d root Pac-10 all the way, since I’m so much more familiar with the teams in our league than the rest of the country. And I’d probably pull for the (few) New York teams that make the Tourney now and then: St. John’s, Manhattan, Binghamton.

What about you? Let me know in the poll below, and expand on your answer if you’d like in the comments section.

When the Huskies' season is over, who do you pull for in the NCAA Tournament? (choose as many as you'd like)

Quincy Dunking at MMadness copyA few quick links after a busy Monday:

The Huskies dropped to 16th in the Coaches’ Poll and 17th in the AP poll after a week in which they lost at Texas Tech in overtime, and then defeated Cal State Northridge at home.

Quincy Pondexter won Pac-10 Player of the Week for the second time this season. Quincy averaged 25.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 3.0 steals over the two games last week. We’ve got a long opinion piece on Quincy coming up tomorrow.

Gaddy by ryan copy

Ryan Petitt / UDubSports.com

A bunch of links to share this morning. Up tomorrow, a preview of the Dawgs biggest test to date on Thursday at Texas Tech.

Interesting piece yesterday in the LA Times about Dwayne Polee, Jr., a 6’6″ (ESPN says 6’7″) wing player out of Westchester HS in LA. Polee had committed to USC years ago, but announced this week that he was reopening his recruitment and was considering five schools, one of them being UW.

Well, if Romar Math says we could conceivably fit Desmond Simmons, Enes Kanter and Terrence Jones into next year’s plans, does it also compute that we could fit in another prospect? My sense is that Polee, a top 100 prospect, is a backup to Jones for the Dawgs. Still, interesting to hear him put UW in his final five. . .

Speaking of Terrence Jones, you’ve got a chance to see him play at Hec Ed on Monday, January 18th, at the King Holiday Classic. Jones’ Jefferson HS will take on Federal Way at 6 PM. No word on how to get tickets in advance yet, but tickets were available at the door for last season’s event.

Mike Seely from Seattle Weekly did this piece linking what he feels is an inflated rank for the Huskies with Abdul Gaddy being, essentially, overrated. I left a comment on this story because I felt it was a bit unfair to base his assessment essentially on one game, and not to even mention Gaddy’s sweet showing against San Jose State.

It’s apparent to me, at this point, that Gaddy isn’t instantly going to be either a big scorer or an All-American caliber point guard until he gets some more experience. But, to ignore the good things Gaddy has done so far is, I think, short-sighted and based on what may have been unrealistic expectations on the part of fans and media following the team.

The Dawgs climbed to #10 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, and #12 in the AP Poll. If we’re the #10 team in the country, we should win four of the next five games (at Texas Tech, vs. Cal St. Northridge, vs. Georgetown in Anaheim, vs. Portland, vs. Texas A&M), which are all tougher (except Cal State Northridge at home) than any we’ve played so far. Winning less than four won’t be cause for alarm, but will say that the Huskies are ranked slightly too high at this point.

That’s all for now! Thanks for coming!

Zone defense 2-3 copyWatching last week’s game against San Jose State, it’s apparent that the Huskies are going to see a lot of zone defense this season. I’m a little concerned about how effective the Spartan defense, employed by clearly less talented players, was so effective in keeping the Dawgs’ offense leashed last night.

Zone defenses will neutralize one of the things the Huskies do best: an up-tempo attack with plenty of guard penetration, and it will force them into more outside shooting, still a question mark for the team.

The good news is that this idea of teams trying to beat the Dawgs with a zone has been apparent since training camp, and the Huskies have been preparing for it. Coach Lorenzo Romar mentioned yesterday that Quincy Pondexter quickly becomes scoring option #1 when teams drop out of man-to-man defense. Quincy’s big game last night (including the first 13 Husky points of the second half, all against a zone) was a big part of the reason San Jose State’s upset dreams never came closer to fruition.

While Quincy will continue to find success working out of the high post against the zone, Isaiah may have his difficulties at times, particularly if his jumper isn’t falling.

In my opinion, there is a lineup the Huskies can employ that’ll be set up for dismantling the zone. However, it will at times require Lorenzo Romar to shorten his bench and take a leap of faith with his three best defensive players (Overton, Holiday, and Gant) all on the bench for certain stretches.

The “Zonebuster” squad looks like this: Abdul Gaddy, with his precision passing and more controlled tempo is necessary when the Huskies find themselves playing against a defense that neutralizes their athletic advantage. Isaiah Thomas is too good not to find a way to be successful against the zone, but will need to temper his urge to drive, and look more to dish once the defense has collapsed on him. Elston Turner is the perfect wing to receive these passes. Clearly more comfortable without a defender in his face, Turner could shoot 40%-45% from deep if most of his shots were the open ones often earned against the zone. Quincy Pondexter moving freely between the high post, or making back door cuts along the baseline, gives the Huskies a zonebusting specialist. And, Tyreese Breshers, who can receive the ball and get a shot up even against double coverage, rounds out my Zonebusters lineup. Breshers is enough of a presence not to get swallowed up even when outnumbered in the post.

What do you think? What will the Huskies do to combat the zone this season? Are you concerned? Let me know below, and thanks for coming.

Which of these best describes your thoughts about the Huskies' ability to run their offense against a zone defense?

Scroll down for part I of today’s Desmond Simmons interview.

The Dawgs are picked 13th in the nation in today’s preseason USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, just behind Cal (12th). No other Pac-10 school made the top 25, but UCLA earned the 29th-most votes, just missing out.

USC earned multiple votes at well. Go figure.

Smith UCLA visit copyJust a quick Josh Smith recruiting update today. . . I reported earlier this week that Josh had cancelled this weekend’s visit to UCLA. Well, according to Scout.com’s premium site, it turns out that he’s rescheduled the visit for the weekend of October 3rd. He’ll be heading down with guard recruits Ray McCallum and Tyler Lamb.

So much for thinking the cancellation of this weekend’s trip was a good sign. And, yes, I know I’m giving a lot of coverage to a recruit many feel is a done deal with UCLA, but I’m holding out hope. Big men like Josh don’t come along often, and I’m still of the belief that until he commits otherwise, he might decide that playing before his family and friends makes more sense than all the hubbub that comes with living in LA.

For the record, 85% of readers who voted in our poll felt that, even if Smith goes one-and-done in school they’d still rather see him at UW than UCLA.

I’ll pass along whatever comes up over the weekend, and I’ve got an interview with a current Husky that I’ll post on Tuesday, once most people are back from the long weekend.

Smith UCLA visit copyFrom Scout.com’s pay site, I learned that Josh Smith cancelled this weekend’s official visit to UCLA. No reason was given, but Anthony Brown, a 6’6″ wing that the Dawgs are also recruiting will be visiting Bruin-land over the Labor Day holiday. The article says that Smith’s visit will be rescheduled. But, here’s a better idea, Josh, commit to the Huskies and save yourself the trip.

All I’ll say, having no further detail on this is that it can’t be a bad thing, right? I’d rather Smith not visit UCLA than visit. My guess, though, is that this is mostly to do with Smith’s attention being on football right now. He’s eligible to play in his first game soon, and I’d imagine he’s busy getting ready for that. As we’ve written about before, Smith is going to play this season (for the first time) for Kentwood High’s football team.

Tell me this is going to go in our favor. Please. A skilled big man like this could be huge, even if just for a year. I’ve heard the dissent to bringing in a likely one-and-done guy, but I’m unconvinced. This is the big fish for UW, and we’re either going to get him, or have to play him twice each year he plays college ball. I’ll take the 6’9″ behemoth on our side of the court.

What do you think faithful readers?

Assuming he's only going to stay in school for one season, would you rather Josh Smith goes to UW or UCLA?

isaiah wooden copyBefore we get to the results from part II of the Fan Poll, news is out today that Isaiah Thomas is one of the 50 players named as a preseason candidate for the John Wooden Player of the Year award, and the All-America Team. Brockman made the list last season, which is whittled down to 30 at midseason.

It’s great to see Isaiah getting some national attention. It really is. Last year, I think a lot of Husky fans had that “am I going crazy?” feeling about Isaiah not getting much national attention, until his ESPN appearance made the rest of the country aware of his awesomeness.

***

Strange to hear that Josh Smith and Tony Wroten will play football this year in addition to hoops. They are, after all, just kids. But, jeez, I’ll be holding my breath every time either of those guys gets tackled and puts his future NBA millions at risk.

***

Here’s a quick dunk video of Clarence Trent that I hadn’t seen before.

***

I was astonished at how many of you showed up and voted in Part II of the Husky Hoops fan poll. Turnout for Part I was good, but the number of you that showed up for Part II was f*&$ing heartwarming.

Here’s how you answered the questions, and then, my thoughts on the same questions:

Which guard will start more games this year?

83% of you said “Abdul Gaddy″
17% of you said “Venoy Overton”

My thoughts: I think this is going to be closer than many of us think. I want to believe Gaddy is going to come in and be a poised, error-free point guard, but freshman are nearly always more error-prone, and need to develop poise by gaining experience. I’m going to go with Gaddy here too, but more because I love Venoy as a sixth man energy jolt. But, come crunchtime, I think you’re going to see a lot of Venoy too.

Other than Abdul Gaddy, which freshman will make the biggest impact this year?

66% of you said “Tyreese Breshers”
20% of you said “Clarence Trent”
14% of you said “C.J. Wilcox”

My thoughts: I agree that it’s not going to be Wilcox, because his best case is probably to squeak ahead of Scott Suggs as the team’s fifth guard. Breshers is the pick here, but as I wrote a few weeks ago, I’m very excited about Clarence Trent coming to town.

Statistically speaking, which of these players will show the biggest improvement this season?

40% of you said “Matthew Bryan-Amaning”
35% of you said “Elston Turner”
14% of you said “Darnell Gant”
7% of you said “Justin Holiday”
4% of you said “Venoy Overton”

My thoughts: My next big opinion piece is going to be about Justin Holiday, who I think has such a redonkulous amount of untapped potential he could bring this team to another level. As far as this question, though, statistically-speaking, I think we’ll be in a lot of trouble if the answer isn’t MBA, although I have my serious doubts. I do think Venoy could make a scoring jump, though, balancing the havoc he wreaks on the defensive end with what he does on the offensive side of the ball.

Pound for pound, who is the best player on the Huskies right now?

50% of you said “Isaiah Thomas”
46% of you said “Quincy Pondexter”
4% of you said “Other”

My thoughts: I’m going to go with the small minority here and say that I think Quincy’s game is just more developed at this point. I want to see Isaiah make less mistakes this year, which I think he will. But, when I look at this question, I think of all of the big possessions last year when Coach put the ball in Quincy’s hands and said gett’er did. And, nearly every time, Q-Pon got her done.

Will Quincy Pondexter be used more often as a small forward or power forward this season?

59% of you said “Small forward”
41% of you said “Power forward”

My thoughts: It doesn’t seem to be Lorenzo Romar’s inclination to tinker too much with his starting lineup to suit a certain matchup. (We started our usual five even in last year’s game against Oklahoma State’s four-guard lineup.) So, I think we’re going to see Quincy start at the three-spot. That said, when the match-up does call for it, I think we’re going to see a lot of lineups with two of the smaller guards, Elston Turner/Justin Holiday/Clarence Trent at the three, and Quincy at the four with only one of our three real big men on the floor. These lineups will be fast, defensively inclined, and still adequate on the boards.

Will Matthew Bryan-Amaning average more than 11 points and 7 rebounds per game?

35% of you said “More than 11 ppg, more than 7 rpg”
27% of you said “More than 11 ppg, less than 7 rpg”
20% of you said “Less than 11 ppg, more than 7 rpg″
18% of you said “Less than 11 ppg, less than 7 rpg″

My thoughts: I would be thrilled with an 11 and 7 season from MBA. Last season, recovering from an injury, MBA averaged 6 points and 4 boards. I believe with an additional 10 minutes per game, he can get to the 7 rebounds, but I’m less inclined to believe he can score in double figures. This is a guy who looked at times last season like he had no offensive game at all. He shot 45% for the season despite taking almost nothing longer than a jump hook. And, he looked unfazed at times, not as bothered by his lackluster play as his coaches or teammates.

There’s no one on the team whose ascendance to “star” level would do more for the Huskies than MBA, but I sadly have to say that I’ll believe it when I see it. I’m going with “under 11 points, over seven rebounds.”

Will Isaiah Thomas be among the top three scorers in the Pac-10?

82% of you said “Yes”
18% of you said “No”

My thoughts: I think it’s going to be four guards competing for the scoring crown: Jerome Randle of Cal, Tajuan Porter of Oregon, Nic Wise of Arizona, and Isaiah. That’s my top four in scoring, and I think I.T. will be in the top three.

Will Justin Holiday average more than four field goal attempts per game? (last year he averaged just under two)

57% of you said “Yes″
43% of you said “No″

My thoughts: This was my wishful thinking question. I just believe it’s not possible for someone to play the game so well in every other area while not having some kind of offensive game. I’m going to write plenty more about this soon. Can you tell I’m excited about Holiday?

Which of these players is least likely to be a regular starter for the Dawgs?

51% of you said “Darnell Gant”
28% of you said “Matthew Bryan-Amaning”
21% of you said “Abdul Gaddy”

My thoughts: I do think all three of these guys are going to start, but I’m curious as to why so many people think Darnell Gant is in such danger of losing his starting spot this year. We’ve only got three big men, so I’m going to say the one who started last year is the most safe. I’m going to say MBA is the one who will be pushed by Tyreese Breshers if he doesn’t step it up early on.

Which of these players is most likely to find his way into the regular starting lineup this season?

36% of you said “Tyreese Breshers″
26% of you said “Elston Turner″
23% of you said “Venoy Overton″
11% of you said “Justin Holiday”
3% of you said “Clarence Trent”
1% of you said “Chris Wilcox”
0% of you said “Scott Suggs”

My thoughts: I agree with those of you that picked Breshers. But, I can’t see a scenario in which Elston Turner starts very often unless there’s an injury in the backcourt. He’s going to be our instant offense off the bench this year, but my guess is that he won’t start unless Coach goes with that small lineup where Quincy is our power forward.

Thanks for coming!

Fan poll II pic copyAhhh, glory. The funk has begun to lift in Montlake. The summer flu that kept me in bed all week is dying down now, and I couldn’t be happier. Sorry again for the lack of new content for a few days, but we’re ready to start tearing it up again here at Montlake Madness.

Before we get to part II of the Fan Poll, here’s a link to one of the many Rick Pitino stories from the past few days. This one includes a quote from Peyton Siva’s Twitter page that states he’s not considering leaving Louisville in the wake of the recent scandal. Siva went to Franklin, of course, and UW was among the final schools in the running before he chose Louisville.

Now, onto Part II of the Fans Speak Out: Montlake Madness UW Husky Hoops Fan Poll. We’ll leave Part II up for a few days, and keep Part I open until tomorrow when I’ll publish the Part I results along with my opinion on those poll questions.

Okay, here’s part II of the poll: questions about the players.
