Plus/Minus for Pac-10 Season to Date

Thanks to reader Rich for putting together these +/- figures for the Pac-10 season to date. Plus/minus measures the team’s performance only when a specific player is on the floor.

Rich has tried to put the numbers in perspective a little bit by giving a “garbage time only” number for three players who are typically on the court once the score has been decided.

Pac-10 games total point differential: +9 (meaning Huskies are nine points better than their opponents during the Pac-10 season)

Matthew Bryan-Amaning: +41

Quincy Pondexter: +39

Venoy Overton: +37

Isaiah Thomas: +37

Justin Holiday: +29

Scott Suggs: +7 (Garbage time only: -23)

Brendan Sherrer: -7

In the Montana game, one rotation (Overton, Thomas, Pondexter, Turner, MBA) was much more successful than all the others, posting a plus/minus of +16. Guess who the starters were for Texas Tech?

Not only did they start, but the coaches played that combination seven different times in the game. Six of those seven turns resulted in a positive +/- for a cumulative +11. There were 19 combinations used. Besides the starters, only three others resulted in a positive +/-. The group of Overton, Pondexter, Turner, Holiday, and Trent resulted in a +5. Gaddy, Thomas, Pondexter, Turner, MBA was +2. Overton, Turner, Suggs, MBA, Gant was +1.

Plus/Minus has long been considered an up-and-coming stat in the basketball world. The website 82games.com keeps detailed plus/minus on the NBA, yet no site that I know of, even the fantastic Kenpom.com, captures them for college hoops.

I’m a fan of the stat, although it’s not without its detractors in the basketball world. It measures a team’s performance while the player was on the floor against its performance with the player on the bench.

Here’s the plus/minus stats from the Montana game:

Elston Turner: +17

Isaiah Thomas: +7

Venoy Overton: +7

Darnell Gant: +5

Matthew Bryan-Amaning: +4

Scott Suggs: +2

Tyreese Breshers: 0
