Dean Rutz - Seattle Times

The Huskies started off conference play with a nice sweep over the Oregon schools and did so in fairly dominating fashion. The Dawgs won both games by 15+ points and led most of both games. Both OSU and UO made it close at times, but the Huskies were able to gut it out and regain the lead through strong offense and denying defense. Up next are newcomers Colorado and Utah, who faced each other last night where Colorado completed dominated a severely diminished Utah team 73-33. I’ll have more on them later, for now let’s talk about the game against the Ducks.

C.J. Wilcox came off the bench in the first half, allowing Tony Wroten to start. It wasn’t so much a demotion as a move to get the Huskies off to a fast start behind the legs and tenacity of Wroten. Wroten has been superb this year at attacking the hoop and, more often than not, completes the lay-in. Wilcox started the second half after entering the game and drilling some smooth shots with a consistent hand. Wilcox and Wroten helped the Dawgs keep the lead despite poor rebounding on both ends of the court and sub-par free throw shooting. With 3 minutes to go in the first half, Wilcox and Wroten accounted for half the Husky points. Wilcox finished the night with a game high 24 points tying his career high he set last March against UCLA when he dropped all 24 in the second half. Wilcox went 8-11 from the field last night, 6-8 from outside, and 2-2 from the free throw line.

E.J. Singler and Olu Ashaolu dominated the glass for the Ducks and combined for 21 rebounds, 9 on the offensive end leading to 16 second chance points as opposed to UW’s 6 total offensive boards and 2 second chance points. The Huskies often let smaller players sneak underneath them to grab boards they had no right taking. The Dawgs simply weren’t aggressive enough on the glass to get the type of numbers they are capable of.

Dana Altman turned what looked to be an absolutely dismal season due to transfers, graduation, and early departure into a respectable 7-11 conference finish and 21-18 overall record. Oregon ended up competing in and winning the CBI basketball tournament, though on very questionable conditions due to their terrible court design and paint job.

Some magazines and reporters are predicting Oregon to make a run at the top of the conference, even predicting finishes as high as fourth place, ahead of UW. While Cal finishing in the top four is very plausible, Oregon finishing in the top four seems down right silly to me.

They were a mediocre team last season who do have some incoming talent so I expect them to finish around the middle of the Pac again this season. Oregon graduated two seniors this past year and have brought in five recruits to fill out the roster.

Key Losses:

  • Joevan Catron, 6-6 245lb - Catron was a huge part of the Duck’s success. A very undersized forward at 6-6, Catron used his weight to have his way down low on the block. He led the team in points and rebounds at 16 points and 7 boards per game. He will be a tough man to replace, but with two incoming forwards at 6-7 and 6-9 the Ducks look to be a bit taller and more capable in the post.
  • Jay-R Stowbridge, 5-11 180lb - Stowbridge was third on the team in scoring at just under 10 points a game. He was a fast guard with some solid ability at driving the lane. While not a prolific scorer, he had a good enough 3 point shot to demand coverage outside and in.
  • Malcolm Armstead, 6-0 190lb - Armstead nearly transferred prior to the 2010-2011 season, but Altman managed to convince him to stay and effectively saved the Ducks from being trampled on by the conference. The convincing didn’t seem to last as Armstead transferred to Wichita State in the off-season. Armstead was a very strong guard for Oregon. He averaged over 8 points per game as well as team highs in assists at 4.4 per game and steals at 2.3 per game. He was a terrific defender with fast hands and feet.

Who: #19 Washington (15-6, 7-3) @ Oregon (11-11, 4-6)

Where: Matthew Knight Arena

When: Saturday, 4 PM

TV: FSN HD (yawn)

I need answers, and I need them fast. Before I get overly emotionally invested in this team’s run into the post season, I need to know what this team’s ceiling truly can be. Will we lose early in the round of 32, or is deep run still possible? I’m usually one to overreact, but I’m struggling to see a crunch-time scorer on this Husky team. Teams have learned that they can pack the paint with a zone defense and IT and the Huskies think they can shoot their way out of it. The paint is the Huskies friend, but they don’t want to hang out anymore.  The most infuriating thing is that this Oregon game won’t give us the answers that we want. Even if the Huskies win in a blow out, the concerns will still exist. On the other hand, if the Huskies lose I can go outside and walk into oncoming traffic and get it over with.

There is good news in Husky nation, however. According to Seattlecrime.com, the UW basketball player will NOT be charged with sexual assault after an investigation when a 16 year old girl accused him of rape. Hopefully this news will help end “The Distraction” and all of the players can focus more on the game on the court.

Now let’s take a look the game coming up at the new Matt Knight Arena.

Oregon 101:

The Ducks are 2-1 at the new arena since opening it with a win against USC in January. Nike U’s new arena has been the biggest basketball story coming out of Eugene this year. As impressive as their new state-of-the-art arena is, their team has been equally unimpressive. They went through a tough stretch early as they lost 6 in a row, but since then they have somewhat righted the ship and gone 4-2. The Ducks best player on the court has been Joevan Catron. He has posted 15.8 ppg and 6.6 rpg which leads the team in each. He is their biggest (and only) threat that worries me. The next on the list is E.J. Singler who sports a nice 11 ppg and 5.8 rpg which both rank second on the team. After those two, the rest are just good role players. Jay-R Strowbridge, Garrett Sim, and Malcolm Armstead are the ones that you will need to know about. All three of those are decent three-point shooters who can stretch the court.

Oregon has been so bad lately, that after their win Thursday against the unranked Cougars, the ESPN recap had this gem: “… Oregon recorded its most convincing win in Pac-10 Conference play in five years with a 69-43 victory against Washington State on Thursday night.” Isn’t that sweet? I almost feel bad for them.

The Ducks mess with their starting line-up a lot, so I wouldn’t be surprised by and sort of changes. They have a bench that goes 9 deep with all 9 playing over 15 minutes. Role players who start but play less minutes often find their way into Dana Altman’s starting line-up. Tyrone Nared and Jonathan Lloyd seem to be the usual suspects.

Projected Starting Line-up:

G – Garrett Sim – 6’1″

G – Jay-R Strowbridge – 5’10″

F – Tyrone Nared – 6’8″

F – E.J. Singler – 6’6″

F/C – Joevan Catron – 6’6″

Keys to Victory:

  • Rebounding/Turnovers – Same old story, but both have been piss-poor during the last two games.
  • Points in the Paint – Feed MBA the ball early and often. While his finishing has regressed a bit lately, the Huskies best chance is to get him the ball or penetrate and draw fouls. Catron can be a force down low as he showed earlier in the season at Hec-Ed.
  • Defense – Just all of it in general. The off ball and the on ball defense has been terrible lately and I can’t explain it. The Huskies need to get their groove back and rediscover what made them so difficult to beat. I just want to see something positive.
  • Re-birth of the “Big Three” – IT, MBA, and Holiday need to reestablish their dominance and get back to what was working earlier in the season. Their combo of point/wing/post scoring was unstoppable and if they show up, they will run the Ducks off of their ugly new court.

Prediction:

I’m getting wary of continuing to pick the Huskies to win, but Oregon is just terrible. Still, they’re feeling confident and the Huskies are not. This will be the first sell-out at the new Matt Knight arena, and I am legitimately scared of losing to our rival and ending our title hopes. Still, I can’t see the Dawgs dropping both of these and this will be the first step back to the top. Huskies win 78-70.

oregon sucksHard to analyze something I couldn’t see, but happy to report that the Huskies defeated Oregon tonight, 86-72, behind a career-high 34 points from Quincy Pondexter.

The Dawgs trailed by one at the half, but took over in the second, on a night when every Husky big man had at least three fouls.

Matthew Bryan-Amaning just missed his second straight double-double, finishing with eight points, ten rebounds. Isaiah Thomas had 14 points and Justin Holiday had 10.

Parting thoughts:

Really? In this day and age, we can’t get a late-season, key matchup on television? Unacceptable.

Sounds like Quincy played his way back into the Player of the Year discussion, huh?

The Dawgs need three more wins to dance, and then I believe we’re in a VERY good spot. Win at Oregon State, beat our first round opponent, beat ASU (or the team that beats ASU) in the second round, and WE ARE IN. That’s how I see it.

14-point victory aside, I don’t want Oregon in the first round. In fact, if you’re asking, I’d like to see Stanford.

I don’t want the season to end. I know we’re probably not going to be national champions, but each year is such a fun ride. Really hoping the Dawgs keep winning so we get to keep watching.

Thanks for coming!

I’m still away on vacation. And, yes, it is strange having no idea what’s going on with the Huskies.

I’ll be back January 10th with full, daily coverage of the Huskies.

Come back tomorrow for post-game analysis from our guest blogger.

While I’m gone, we’ll have plenty at Montlake Madness to keep you occupied, but for full game coverage, check out these excellent (and free) websites:
