josh smith dunking copyAgain, reports of the demise of UW’s Josh Smith recruitment have proven premature. The Seattle Times’ Sandy Ringer talked to Josh Smith’s mom recently who told her that Josh is only considering UCLA and UW at this point.

The story reports that they’ve let Oklahoma know that Smith won’t be taking a visit there, but will visit UW in the next few weeks, and announce his decision shortly thereafter.

This has been the story of the off-season for Husky fans, with a lot of back and forth on message boards and websites, and an awful lot of will he?/won’t he? rumors. I’ve enjoyed watching this unfold and sharing what we know with you. This, after all, is college basketball’s version of the hot stove, and what better to occupy our minds with during the (too) long off-season? Anyone feeling fatigued by the ups and downs of waiting to see if Smith will come play at UW should consider the alternative: nary a prized recruit even considering the Huskies.

Yes, the buzz I’ve heard definitely tends to lean in the direction of UCLA. Examples pointing to this abound, like this one after his official visit to LA: Josh’s current Facebook status (from Monday) is “had the best weekend of life. shout out to my ucla family.” (sic)

One of the interesting points I’ve read now and then is that Smith, a potential one-and-done player (although this is purely speculation), would be a bad addition for UW. Some point to Spencer Hawes setting back the prograpull quote josh smithm (which I disagree with), and think Smith will be a similar example. Others point to the 6’9″, 270 pound Smith being a player who will fit poorly into Coach Romar’s run-and-gun offense.

I’m not going to argue that Terrence Jones (recruiting story #1B of the off-season), a long and athletic forward might be a better fit style-wise, but can anyone really make the case that one of the top big men in the country coming to UW would be a bad thing? Really?

I know a lot of the sources out there covering the team think Josh Smith to UCLA is a done deal. But, we’re here to bring you the fan’s perspective, shamelessly. And what does a fan do? Die hard.

So, we’ll keep covering the recruitments of Josh Smith and Terrence Jones until they declare elsewhere, because getting either of them would put the UW program in a position to enter the national championship discussion. Can you even imagine getting both?

Thanks for coming! What do you think? Is the recruiting roller coaster tiresome for you? Why? Let us know!

josh smith kentwood uniThanks to local hoops insider Jason McCleary who confirmed for Husky Digest that Josh Smith is indeed down on his official visit at UCLA this weekend. Dawgman confirmed the news shortly after.

I communicated very briefly with Josh and asked him if he planned to commit to UCLA this weekend and he said “Nah. Just down here to visit. Not committing.”

Well, bad for the Dawgs that he’s down there, but great that he’s not planning to end the weekend by dashing our hopes.

uw_seal update copyWe posted a report on Husky recruiting for the Class of 2011 this week. And, since it’s been a while since our Class of 2010 recruiting post, so I wanted to give you an update on some of the status changes that have occured since the time we last reported on the names being tossed around as potential new additions to the Dawgs for next season:

Josh Smith (C, Kentwood HS): There have been reports of a UCLA visit coming up this weekend, but Scout.com reported that Josh wasn’t going to be focusing on recruiting again until after football season. We’re in the mix here along with UCLA, and depending on what you believe: Oklahoma, North Carolina, and potentially a few other darkhorse possibilities.

Terrence Jones (F, Jefferson HS): Recently cut his list to seven schools with UW being one of them. Folks as far flung as Kansas and Oklahoma are engaging in the same wishful thinking that Dawg fans are about Jones, who expects to start taking his official visits soon and make a decision in the fall. *As of last night, Jones has cut Kansas from the list, meaning UW is one of the final six in line for Jones now.

Gary Franklin, Jr. (PG, Mater Dei HS): Recently declared his top five schools (Cal, Arizona and ASU among them), and the Dawgs were not included.

Jordin Mayes (PG, Westchester HS): Hasn’t mentioned UW in recent interviews, and taking official visits elsewhere. Doesn’t look like we’re in the running here.

Garrett Jackson (SF, Westview HS): Committed to USC, so he’s off the board.

Alex Kirk (C, Los Alamos HS): As we reported a few weeks ago, UW hasn’t been actively recruiting Alex. If he spurns his hometown Lobos, and opts for the Pac-10, word is that Arizona has the inside track.

Anthony Brown (SF, Ocean View HS): Deciding between Stanford and UCLA, with the Huskies apparently not in the picture.

Stephen Holt (PG, Jesuit HS): Committed to St. Mary’s.

Renado Parker (SF, North Idaho College): Committed to Idaho.

So, it really does look like we’re putting all of our energy behind Smith and Jones right now, which I actually take as a good sign. LoRo’s been to the rodeo before, and while I don’t think he’s got assurances about anything, I don’t sense that he’s just going through the motions for these prized recruits. Heck, he’s even working football into his workouts — surely a good idea when trying to recruit these multi-sport recruits!

Hey, thanks for coming!

Josh Smith copyIn an article today on Scout.com’s pay site, Josh Smith revealed that he hadn’t yet set any official visits to go see the schools recruiting him.

Smith said he was working on lining up visits, but really focused on football right now. Asked about his current thinking on schools, he said:

“Right now I’m not going to lie. I haven’t been thinking about recruiting. I think I’ll focus a lot more during the basketball season. I’ve got football six days a week. I’m just trying to live out being a kid.”

Although Josh has been to UCLA before, he’s certainly most familiar with UW at this point. The longer he delays these trips, the better, I think. Maybe he never needs to visit Oklahoma, and the next time he sets foot on the UCLA campus will be on his way to spank the Bruins as a member of the Dawgs. Still holding out hope here at Montlake Madness…

Chris BehrensI had a chance to speak with local baller Christian Behrens, a 6’7″ forward from Tahoma HS. He’s been linked with UW, largely, I think, because he’s local and the hometown Dawgs would make a lot of sense.

You’ll read about Behrens soon in my State of the 2011 Recruiting Class post that I’ve been putting together for longer than I’d expected to. But, for now: Christian is rated by ESPN as the #22 power forward in his class, but isn’t ranked yet by Scout.com. He’s described as being a thin, finesse player.

I spoke to Christian this week and he said that UW is indeed recruiting him, but that he hadn’t begun to pare down the schools that he’s considering, nor has he ranked them yet either.

The list he recited for me of the schools he’s considering was pretty long: Washington St., Gonzaga, Cal, Stanford, Santa Clara, Arizona, Harvard, Portland, Portland St., Seattle U., and UW.

Behrens is also teammates with Josh Smith on the Seattle Rotary AAU team. I couldn’t resist asking if he had any inclination as to what his teammate was going to do, and he told me that he believes Josh is still undecided, so he had no idea.

Thanks for coming!

loro football game copyJosh Smith registered the first sack of his football career Friday night in Kentwood High School’s 21-14 victory over Tahoma. Although the word was that he’d be used on the O-line, it sounds like he got some time on the defensive side of the ball Friday.

Interestingly, Lorenzo Romar was in the stands, catching his second football game in about a week, after watching Terrence Jones’s football game in Albany, Oregon last weekend.

This says two things to me:

1. Coach Romar is probably watching WAY more high school football than he wishes he were.

I believe we can be very good this year, but I still see a gap between us and schools like Kentucky, UNC, or Kansas. Getting either of these guys would mean we could run with anyone in the country. Getting both would mean we’d be a hot pick to make a run at the Final Four, which brings me to the second observation:

2. Coach believes it’s possible for him to close the deal with either (or both) of these kids. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be spending his Friday nights in Tahoma, or Albany, Oregon.

Most of the recruiting info we get is dodgy — it changes every day, one guys says one thing, another guy’s Twitter page says something else. But, if Coach Romar believes we can get these guys? I take that to be the strongest evidence that we should too.

PS – Coach Howland was not in the stands Friday night.

wroten knee copyThere was a lot of discussion among local basketball fans regarding the wisdom (or lack thereof) of going out for the football team this year when your name is “Tony Wroten Jr.” or “Josh Smith.” The top two local high school hoopsters are both suiting up for their schools on the gridiron this season. Smith is also the Huskies’ top recruiting target for 2010, while Wroten is the top guy we’ll be looking to enroll for 2011.

Well, Tony Wroten had a stellar debut last week, with two interceptions and a TD catch, but also bruised his knee, causing him to miss Thursday’s game, which Garfield lost to Inglemoor. Here’s the Seattle Times’ coverage of the game and his injury.

Josh Smith had his debut on the football field last night, but it sounds like he saw very limited playing time and didn’t cause much fanfare either way. (Other than the Is he really going to jeopardize his NBA future? kind of fanfare…)

I’ve been somewhat quiet on this given my strong feelings. It’s because, frankly, none of “us” (fans, media, future college coaches, etc.) get a say. These kids want to play football, they have every right. All I can say is this: if it were me, even the smallest chance of an injury would keep me from suiting up, given all that I’d stand to lose.

That said, I wish these kids all the health and success in the world. These are their risks to take.

uw_seal copyWe’ve given a lot of coverage here to the recruitment by the Huskies of Josh Smith, the Kentwood High School senior universally ranked as one of the top centers preparing to enter the NCAA in 2010. Although I do feel he’s the biggest game-changer on the Huskies’ radar, he’s certainly not the only UW target in his class, not to mention the 2011 class, which contains plenty of potential Dawgs as well.

Today, we’ll profile the names you’re likely to hear more about in the coming months, as they narrow down their choices, with UW hopefully being high on many of their lists. Later this week, we’ll do the same thing for the 2011 class (current high school juniors), and examine who we’re looking at for the season after next.

A few basic things to keep in mind as you salivate over the possibility of several of the players below coming to Montlake:

  • The Huskies can have 13 scholarship players per year. But, this season it looks like they’ll only use 12 of those spots, since Charles Garcia was ruled ineligible and is going to play at Seattle University instead.
  • Assuming no one leaves school early or transfers, the Huskies will lose only Quincy Pondexter after the 2009/2010 season, meaning they’ll have eleven returning players with two scholarships available. One of these has been given to Desmond Simmons, a 6’7″ forward from Richmond, California. He’s ranked as the 25th best power forward in the 2010 class by Scout.com, and the 46th best small forward by ESPN. (It’s always possible, of course, that an extra recruit comes on board and the coaches gently suggest that a current player transfer to make room.)
  • Making the same assumption about no one leaving early or transferring, the Huskies will lose another three players after the 2010/2011 season (Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Venoy Overton, Justin Holiday), leaving three openings for recruiting current high school juniors.
  • And finally, recruiting info is sketchy at best. Coaches can’t discuss recruiting. Players generally prefer not to share their considerations with the media. And, information varies wildly from website to website. So, please take these as my best guesses, and don’t be surprised if someone not on one of these lists winds up playing at UW in the near future.

Okay, onto the class of 2010 recruits. These are the guys who will play their senior seasons this year, and (likely) make their verbal commitment to a school sometime between now and early spring. All of these guys have been linked to UW as possible targets. Height/weight info courtesy of ESPN. Players are listed in order of their (generally-accepted) rating with the first listing being the most highly-touted, and the last being the least prominent recruit.

recruit 1 Josh Smith copyJosh Smith
Center, Kentwood HS (Covington, WA)
6’10″, 270 lbs.
ESPN rank: #10 overall, #1 Center
Scout.com rank: #13 overall, #4 Center
Video link: here and here

The skinny: The word on Josh Smith is that Josh Smith is the only guy who can stop him. His ability as a shot-blocker and passer has been noted, and he’s strong enough to score and rebound in bunches against most defenders. The one knock I’ve heard is that Smith tends to sleepwalk through parts of games, leading some to question his desire. Watching him on video, it’s easy to see where this idea comes from. Personally, I think the fact that the game looks so effortless to him maybe isn’t such a bad thing. Just saying.

UW’s chances: Clearly the program’s top target at the moment, but the rumor for months has been that Smith would announce any day that he was going to UCLA. It’s clear to me that he will indeed be either a Bruin or a Husky. We’ve got the hometown advantage, but often the word on the street tends to be right. I’d guess we’re looking at a 40% chance of landing Smith.

recruit 2 terrence jones copyTerrence Jones
Small Forward/Power Forward, Jefferson HS (Portland, OR)
6’8″, 219 lbs.
ESPN rank: #15 overall, #3 Small Forward
Scout.com rank: #20 overall, #6 Power Forward
Video link: here

The skinny: The confusion over Jones’ position seems to be because he has a good enough perimeter game to play the three spot, but has the body and rebounding ability (even on the offensive boards) of a four. According to ESPN, he can guard all five positions, and shoots well from beyond the arc as well. Versatile is the word that people tend to inevitably use when describing Jones.

UW’s chances: Jones has said that he’s in no hurry to commit, and has offers on the table from more than half of the Pac-10, along with Kansas, Kentucky, Florida and others. He’s got a lot of in-home visits scheduled for the next few months, including one with UW. With so many schools in the mix, I’d guess we’ve got no more than a 20% chance of landing Jones.

Recruit 3 gary franklin copyGary Franklin, Jr.
Point Guard, Mater Dei HS (Santa Ana, CA)
6’2″, 183 lbs. (ESPN says 6’2″, but I’ve seen 6’0″ in several places)
ESPN rank: #66 overall, #14 Point Guard
Scout.com: #85 overall, #16 Point Guard
Video link: here

The skinny: Franklin is an odd case because scouts tend to rave about his scoring ability, and note his gorgeous jump shot and three-point range. However, I’ve heard just as much about the holes in his point guard skills. Chief among the negative points is a severe inability to drive effectively with his left hand — the result of a football injury (he broke his humerus) at age 13.

UW’s chances: ESPN lists UW as the top contender for Franklin, who pulled out of a commitment to USC. Franklin has mentioned Washington as a serious contender in a recent interview, and has stated he wants to play for a coach who plays at a fast pace. Cal, Baylor and Utah are other possible options. Although I don’t know if we’ll want another small guard next season, I sense the buzz and momentum are moving in the direction of a Husky/Franklin pairing. Depending on how things shake out with Smith and Jones, I think we’ve got a 40-50% chance of landing Franklin.

recruit 4 jordin mayes copyJordin Mayes
Shooting Guard/Point Guard, Westchester HS (Los Angeles, CA)
6’3″, 175 lbs.
ESPN rank: #45 Shooting Guard
Scout.com: #30 Point Guard
Video link (about 30 seconds in): here

The skinny: Mayes is a combo guard said to have a good jump shot with developing point guard skills.

UW’s chances: He’s listed as a Husky target on Scout.com, but not on ESPN or Rivals. I sense he’s more likely to wind up at Wazzu than the Dub, but it’s still early. I think this is remote, and we’ve got a 5% chance of landing Mayes.

recruit 5 garrett jackson copyGarrett Jackson
Small Forward, Westview High School (Portland, OR)
6’6″, 180 lbs.
ESPN rank: #42 Small Forward
Scout.com rank: #39 Small Forward

The skinny: Recent improvement on his jump shot has moved Jackson from a likely mid-major recruit to a guy being looked at by UW, Oregon, Oregon State and other big-time schools. The word is that he thrives in the transition game, which means a system like Romar’s could bring out the best in Jackson.

UW’s chances: I’m not aware that we’ve offered to Jackson at this point, nor have any of the other Pac-10 schools looking at him. But, Portland, Portland State, and several others have. My sense is that by the time UW knows whether it has a scholarship available for him, he’ll be off the board at a smaller school. I think we’ve got a 10% chance of landing Jackson.

recruit 6 avery johnson copyAvery Johnson
Shooting Guard, Ocean View HS (Huntington Beach, CA)
6’3″, 190 lbs.
ESPN rank: #63 Shooting Guard
Scout.com rank: NR
Video link: here

The skinny: ESPN calls him a “blue-collar” sleeper who does “all the little things” to help a team win. He’s called a strong rebounder for his size and a decent defender, but with an iffy jumper.

UW’s chances: Arizona has offered a scholarship, but Coach Romar is friendly with Johnson’s father and he’s already made a visit to Seattle. Although ‘Zona is the front-runner, I think there’s a 20% chance of landing Johnson.

recruit 7 kendall williams copyKendall Williams
Point Guard, Los Osos HS (Rancho Cucamonga, CA)
6’2″, 170 lbs.
ESPN rank: #31 Point Guard
Scout.com rank: #41 Point Guard
Video link (about 38 seconds in): here

The skinny: Called a good decision maker and on-ball defender, ESPN points out that he gets too emotionally involved in his individual match-up. (Paging Venoy Overton. . .)

UW’s chances: After pulling out of a verbal to UCLA (word is that it was mutual between the coaching staff and Williams), he’s back on the market. San Francisco, Wazzu, Stanford and Cal are the competition here. I’ve got no further insight here, but since point guard seems to be a spot we need less than others for next year, I’ll give us only a 10% chance of landing Williams.

Other class of 2010 names with loose ties to UW recruiting include:

Alex Kirk: The #7 (ESPN) or #13 (Scout.com) center in his class, Kirk would be a fantastic get for the Dawgs, but there’s really nothing I can find about Kirk reciprocating Washington’s interest in him (we’ve offered him a scholarship) as of yet.

Anthony Brown: A 6’6″ small forward who visited UCLA this weekend, and is visiting Cal, ‘Zona and Stanford in the coming weeks, after which he says he’ll make a decision. A recent interview didn’t mention UW, so I’m not going to cover Brown any further for now.

Stephen Holt: A rising 6’3″ Portland point guard considering more than 10 schools with offers from four. One site says UW is among those courting him, but without more info, I think chances here are slim.

Tyler Johnson: An athletic 6’2″ shooting guard who gets down the court quickly and throws down exciting dunks, UW is listed on one site as one of seven schools he’s considering, although no known offer has been made.

Renado Parker: The 6’5″ Idaho small forward was thought to be a potential prospect, but an insightful recent report from Huskydigest.com, which spoke to Parker, found that to be untrue. More likely is that he’ll wind up at Seattle U.

So, faithful readers, who do YOU want see in a Husky uniform? I’d love to hear from you in the comments section…

Thanks for coming! See you tomorrow. Later this week: State of the 2011 Recruiting Class.

suggs interview copyScott Suggs was one of the men at the end of the bench for Lorenzo Romar last season, rarely seeing time with the game still in play. And, truth be told, not many fans would know what to expect from the 6’6″ guard this season, because they simply didn’t see enough of Suggs last year to make a judgment.

But, this guy was the top player in Missouri as a high school senior, and the 15th-ranked shooting guard in his class. No one with that amount of success at one level wants to ride the pine at the next. So, succeed or fail, it would be foolish to imagine that Suggs isn’t going to do everything in his power to make more of an impact this year.

I caught up with Scott this week and had a chance to get his take on the road to the regular rotation, and other thoughts on last season, and the year ahead.

Montlake Madness: So, last season, I imagine you didn’t get on the court as much as you’d have wished. What can we expect from Scott Suggs this year?

Scott Suggs: You can expect to see me contributing to the team much more this season.

MM: What did you learn last year that’s going to make you a major contributor this year?

SS: I just became more familiar with the system, and also more comfortable with a year of experience under my belt

MM: What was the biggest surprise going from high school to the Pac-10?

SS: Probably the amount of talent that each team has. Even teams that are not seen to be as good as others will still have pretty good players.

MM: So, you were a part of that group of Huskies that was getting up ridiculously early for a few months and practicing?

SS: Yeah. During the spring we were getting up at about 6:00 AM, and working out around 6:30. But in the summer we were working out at like 8:00 or 8:30 so we got a little bit more sleep.

MM: During the season, what’s a normal day like, with practice, classes, etc?

SS: A typical day is workouts at 6:30am, class from about 9:00-3:00, practice from 3:30-6:30 or 7:00, and then tutoring from like 7:30-9:00. So, we have a pretty full day during the season.

MM: When I spoke to Artem Wallace last week, he said you were going to be a guy that surprised a lot of people this year. Let me ask you, did you ever have a conversation with Coach Romar last season expressing that you wanted to play more?

SS: Yeah, I talked to him about that a few times during and after the season, and he just kept telling me to keep working hard in practice. At the end of the season, i just talked to him about what i needed to work on and those types of things.

MM: And what did he tell you to work on?

SS: Defense, and continue shooting, and of course getting stronger.

MM: Which of your teammates has surprised you most this summer as far as improvement? Who’s going to surprise people this season?

SS: Well, Darnell Gant’s shot is really coming along, and i think teams are gonna have to respect his jumper. I also think Abdul Gaddy is gonna be a nice addition to the team this year.

MM: If the season started tomorrow, do you think Abdul starts at the point?

SS: Hmmm… i dont know. (laughs) We’ll find out once practice time comes.

MM: No guesses? Personally, i love Venoy’s energy off the bench.

SS: Yeah, he does bring a lot of energy. But i know that those guys are gonna be battling it out for that starting spot.

MM: Does any of that ever affect the way guys get along off the court?

SS: Nah. Everybody is friends off the court, but on the court we have no friends!. (laughs)

MM: How are you guys gonna beat Cal this year? They look like the biggest obstacle to the Dawgs repeating as champs.

SS: Yeah, they’re returning all of their guys. I’m sure our coaches will have a gameplan for them — probably from day one.

MM: Tell me a little about Scott Suggs off the court. What’s something the fans don’t know about you?

SS: Well, I’m a pretty goofy person and i like to make people laugh.

MM: What do you do for fun in your time off the court?

SS: Just hanging out with my teammates really. Everybody on the team is pretty goofy actually.

MM: Do you guys on the team pay attention to who’s being recruited? Guys like Josh Smith, Terrence Jones, Tony Wroten?

SS: I haven’t really seen any of those guys play, but I’ve heard of them.

MM: What was it about Coach Romar and UW that made you choose the school, above the other prestigious colleges recruiting you (like Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin)?

SS: Probably just the relationship I had with Coach Romar. I had been over to his house when he was the coach at St. Louis University. My dad’s co-worker was his best friend.

MM: What’s the one thing we wouldn’t know as fans about life as a Division I college basketball player? What don’t we see?

SS: The amount of work that we have to put in behind the scenes to be able to compete at this level. It’s basically a full-time job because we are training year-round.

MM: One more thing. I’ve got a post up on my site right now about where I’d play all you guys if I were coaching the Husky basketball team in a football game. I’ve got you at outside linebacker.

SS: I’m more of a receiver, if i do say so myself. (laughs)

Smith UCLA visit copyJust a quick Josh Smith recruiting update today. . . I reported earlier this week that Josh had cancelled this weekend’s visit to UCLA. Well, according to Scout.com’s premium site, it turns out that he’s rescheduled the visit for the weekend of October 3rd. He’ll be heading down with guard recruits Ray McCallum and Tyler Lamb.

So much for thinking the cancellation of this weekend’s trip was a good sign. And, yes, I know I’m giving a lot of coverage to a recruit many feel is a done deal with UCLA, but I’m holding out hope. Big men like Josh don’t come along often, and I’m still of the belief that until he commits otherwise, he might decide that playing before his family and friends makes more sense than all the hubbub that comes with living in LA.

For the record, 85% of readers who voted in our poll felt that, even if Smith goes one-and-done in school they’d still rather see him at UW than UCLA.

I’ll pass along whatever comes up over the weekend, and I’ve got an interview with a current Husky that I’ll post on Tuesday, once most people are back from the long weekend.
