So, no Brett Hundley on Labor Day. Boo hoo. But Hikeem Stewart went ahead and changed the conversation on Monday night with the announcement that he had committed to the UW for the 2011 class over Twitter:

“Its official I comitted to the university of Washington yeEeeeeaaaaah let’s go huskies!”

Hikeem became the first piece of a potential epic  2011 UW recruiting class on Monday and is eager to represent the 206 at Hec Ed next year. Unlike his older twin brothers, Lod and Rod, Hikeem chose to stay home to don purple and gold in front of his friends and family. He becomes the first Rainier Beach player to sign with UW dating back to Nate Robinson.

WIth Hikeem, UW is getting a SG who has the ball handling ability to play the PG spot. UW gets yet another knockdown shooter in Stewart who adds to UW’s already deep backcourt. Hikeem is also known for his court vision. Many of his highlights are of him dropping dimes in transition with swag. After watching his PRO-AM highlights from two weeks ago, he definitely looks to have the build and the size to become an immediate contributor next year. His performance this summer at his AAU tournaments definitely helped his case in his rise in the recruiting charts. WIth the entire 2010 season ahead of him, I fully expect him to break the top 100 with ease by season’s end. Congratulations Hikeem, Montlake is eager to see what you can do.

So Who’s Next?

Jabari Brown will be in town for his official visit on September 18th for the Nebraska game at Husky Stadium. Some feel that he could very well commit on that visit. He is fielding in home visits this week with several schools including UW. Romar gets his in-home chance on the Thursday, the 9th. From everything I have heard, we are in good standing with Jabari and should have a great shot at landing him in the early recruiting period.

Tony Wroten officially announced on Twitter that he will be looking to announce in late September or October. He is taking his official visit to Louisville on 9/22. He said over “Talkin’ Hoops” with Jim Basnight that he will be looking to schedule his official visit to UW with none other than Hikeem Stewart. Given the buzz, I think it will come down to Louisville and UW. In my opinion, he will be ours to lose.

If we sign those three guards, we will have the best and deepest backcourt in the country. No if’s and’s or but’s. We all know Romar is supposed to be putting a heavy emphasis on recruiting for big men this off season, but with the talent pool of guards in 2011, Romar needs to recruit the best players out there and build the team around them.

Kevin Davis will likely be the 4th signee this year if he can get his grades together at TCC and would be a huge signing for Lorenzo.

If a 5th scholarship is awarded (Romar Math), Pelle and Angelo Chol will be competing for that spot. We will likely have to battle Steve Lavin  for Pelle’s services, as St. John’s is hot on his tail. Chol on the other hand is down to four schools as he eliminated UCONN weeks ago. We will be waiting until spring to hear Chol’s decision.

With the depth of big men coming out in 2012, Romar is probably going to load up with as many guards as possible this year. Brandon Ashley and Jordan Tebbutt figure to be our top targets next year.

But, back to the main story. Hikeem is continuing the 2011 “hometown hero” legacy with his announcement today. Kasen and ASJ are definitely #saluting you now.

Hikeem? Check. Tony? We are waiting…

Scout.com reported earlier today that highly coveted five star recruit Jabari Brown has widdled his way down to just seven schools vying for his services. Here are his final seven (in no particular order): UW, Cal, Georgia Tech, St. John’s, Oregon,  DePaul, and UCONN.

No, there is no typo here. Kansas is no longer on his list. Shocker right? I definitely think so. For the last month heading into his final AAU tournament, all the buzz was about Rock Chalk Jayhawks. All the rumors were about Jabari wanting to play along side his AAU teammate, Josiah Turner. Maybe something has happened?

Given the latest list Jabari has released, one couldn’t help but get excited about the possibility of a future Wroten and Brown backcourt. Throw in Hikeem Stewart while you are at it, and we can have a party.

It’s still a bit premature to assume anything, but Jabari has only set up one official visit thus far. And whom might that be? Yes, that’s right.  Romar has an in home visit scheduled on 9/9. And Jabari says he’s visiting Montlake on September 18th to watch Jake Locker and the Dawgs take down Nebraska. (Tangent: I am super stoked to hear ASJ is now a Husky)

He is also working on setting up official visits with Oregon, Georgia Tech and Depaul. Cal is in his backyard in Berkeley and will be able to take an unofficial there. Brown is claiming that “all schools are equal right now.”

From my point of view, it will likely be a two horse race between Cal and UW. Mike Montgomery will surely be in Jabari’s ear about how important playing in front of family will be. The upside for the Dawgs: Cal is at least two years away from being a title contender after losing their 4 starters to graduation last year. Don’t be surprised if Steve Lavin becomes part of a bigger conversation with Brown. Lavin has shown much interest in the west coast, especially with their guards as of late. He may be a contender after all is said and done. As it stands, UW fans should feel confident in their standing with Brown as I had last heard that UW was one of his leaders, if not THE leader, before the whole Kansas topic came up in conversations months ago.

Jabari went on to say in the article that he needs to “figure out if he can spend up to four years [at the school he chooses.]” All in all, things are looking bright for Romar if that is the case. Romar is second to none in terms of developing and graduating his talent in four years time with a degree. Jabari has definitely shown his cards to read that he’s not just another one and done. Only time will tell.

From the sounds of things, Brown wants to make his decision in the early signing period after he takes his five official visits. Sounds like a five star that won’t be making us wait to the deadline.

With today’s news, my guess is that we sign the following this year:

1. Wroten

2. Brown

3. Stewart

4. Chol

5. Davis/Kingma

All for now. Thanks for coming!

jabari

  • Jabari Brown. Get to know the name Dawg fans if you haven’t already. Jabari is quickly becoming a household name on the west coast and across the nation. The highly touted shooting guard from Oakland, CA is now one of Romar’s top targets in the 2011 class. Let’s take a look at this 2011 prospect.

 - “Sweetest stroke on the West Coast.”

- “Rising the recruiting charts”

- “Putting Cali back on the map”

  • Name: Jabari Brown
  • Height: 6’4”
  • Position: SG
  • Class: 2011
  • Scout Ranking Overall: #15
  • Location: Oakland, CA
  • AAU Team(s): Drew Gooden Soldiers
  • High School Team: Findlay Prep
  • Interested Schools: Kansas, Maryland, Wake Forest, Arizona State, California, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, UNLV and Washington

If you haven’t gotten a chance to watch Jabari in action, feast your eyes on these:

Highlight 1 and Highlight 2

What kind of game does Jabari have?

After watching film of this guy, I couldn’t help but compare his game as a hybrid of both Aaron Afflalo and Brandon Roy.  When assessing his frame and stature, he already has the body and strength to be successful at the NCAA level and beyond.  He’s a legit 2-guard who is highly acclaimed for his shooting ability and range. Simply put, this kid can flat out score. Jabari has the offensive skill set that  makes him a threat from all ranges of the court. He can take you off the dribble or he can jab step you and pull up in your eye from beyond the arc. The part of Jabari’s game that is definitely starting to garner attention is his ability to create his own shot.

The best way to watch one on one skills is to watch some of these summer highlights . He is a master of the dribble and step back jumper. Very B-Roy-esque when you watch him create space for his own jump shot. He is also a very explosive finisher at the rim as well.  The one part of his game that I have yet to see footage of is his work in the post, but it is an aspect of his game that he is working to improve to showcase his offensive versatility.

Jabari’s two favorite NBA players are Brandon Roy and Carmelo Anthony. You can definitely see that portions of his game are molded from his two idols. It couldn’t hurt that one of his favorite players played for Romar right?

His game fits well with a high octane offense such as UW’s.   He may not have the natural agility of a Terrence Ross, but definitely has shown that he can be counted on as a #1 scoring option and could possibly carry a team as he matures.

What kind of person is Jabari?

From the interviews I have listened to, I can tell you that he is a smart and well spoken individual. He is a born winner and loves the game of basketball.  Definitely a humble personality that wants to improve and prove to the nation that he is one of the best out there. Sounds like a perfect fit for Romar’s  coaching style.

Where would he fit in the rotation in 2011-2012?

This would definitely depend on the personnel we have available next year, but if IT does feel he is ready for the draft next year, Jabari would have a great opportunity to slide in the starting SG spot and play alongside T-Ross in 2011. If that did happen, we would have two guys that really could open up the floor and create their own shots.

How is Jabari’s recruiting going?

From a web radio show called “Off The Boards” I stumbled upon, I am feeling good that UW is high on his list, if not the leader at this point. I was lucky enough to catch the tail end of that show where they featured an interview with Jabari Brown. Here were some snippets that are worth noting

  • Jabari on the huge number of schools recruiting him: “Some schools I am familiar with. There are a few schools I know everything about. You have to talk to the coach and then watch how they play. You have to hear from former players and how they feel about the coach.”

  • Jabari on his visits at Wake Forest and Maryland:  WF was a good visit.  I like the state of NC…very laid back. Smaller school. Maryland went well. Got to walk around with Keyshawn Howard and he showed me around. “

  • Jabari on Kansas: “Coach Self is a great coach. You got to look at the NBA and how many players are going from KU. ”

  • Jabari on Washington:  I love Washington. I love Coach Romar. I talk to him a lot. He’s a real down to earth guy and real good person. I definitely think that’s a place I could see myself playing.  Especially with the backcourt guys that they’ve had: Brandon Roy, Bobby Jones and Nate Rob.”

  • Jabari on his parents influencing his decision:  My parents want me to go over wherever is best for me. They will fly out to watch me.”

Does UW have a shot at both Jabari and Tony Wroten?

Absolutely there is a possibility. Lucky for us, both of these guys play different positions with Brown at the SG and Wroten at the PG. Getting both of these guys would leap frog UW into a top 10-15 class. We will be stocked with talented guards if that is the case. You can never have enough talent at the guard position in a Romar system.

When will Jabari make a decision?

According to the last twitter comments from Jabari, it sounds like he is aiming to decide and sign in the early signing period this Fall. Let’s just hope Romar and Desmond Simmons can lure him away from the Bay.

All for now. Thanks for coming.

recruit d Jabari Brown copyHad a chance recently to catch up with Jabari Brown, a Bay Area shooting guard from the class of 2011 ranked #58 nationally by ESPN. Brown will be playing for Findlay Prep in Nevada this season honing his already top-flight skills on the court.

We covered Jabari in our State of the 2011 Recruiting Class post a few months back, and at the time thought there was only a slim chance he’d wind up at the Dub. But after speaking with him, our chances sound a whole lot better.

Montlake Madness: Are the Huskies still on your radar?

Jabari Brown: Yeah, they are.

MM: How many other schools in the running?

JB: I’m wide open right now, so i don’t have an exact number. Washington is high on that unofficial list though.

MM: Planning to visit the school anytime soon?

JB: I want to, but I’m not sure. I talked to Desmond (Simmons) about it a couple days ago.

MM: Has UW offered a scholarship to you?

JB: No, not yet.

MM: But, they’re in touch?

JB: Yeah.

MM: You and Desmond are friends, right?

JB: Yeah, we’re real close.

MM: What’s the most important thing to you when choosing a school?

JB: Coaching, playing style, and playing time freshman year.

MM: Has UW given you an indication that the playing time would be there?

JB: We haven’t had any conversations about that.

MM: Which coach is in touch with you from UW?

JB: Paul Fortier.

Thanks for coming!

uw_seal copy 2011In case you missed it, please check out our State of the Recruiting 2010 Class post. I’ll give you an update on what’s changed since I posted the 2010 column soon, as some players mentioned have indeed made commitments.

As promised, here’s a breakdown of who we could be looking at in Husky uniforms two years from now. These are guys who will play their junior seasons this year, and (likely) make their commitment to a school sometime between now and spring 2011.

By the time any of the players below would don a Husky uniform, Quincy Pondexter, Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Venoy Overton, and Justin Holiday will all have graduated. Abdul Gaddy will have played the two seasons he’s required to before considering a jump to the NBA, due to his age. And, Isaiah Thomas would be a senior.

All of these guys have been linked to UW as possible targets. Height/weight info courtesy of ESPN. Players are listed in order of their (generally-accepted) rating with the first listing being the most highly-touted, and the last being the least prominent recruit.

recruit a Tony Wroten copyAnthony (Tony) Wroten, Jr.*
Guard, Garfield HS (Seattle)
6′5″, 206 lbs.
ESPN rank: #5 overall, #2 Point Guard
Scout.com rank: #8 overall, #2 Point Guard
Video link: here

The skinny: Wroten is clearly a gifted guard, who can score, jump, and dish off oh no, he didn’t! passes, but he has a bit of a reputation of trying to push the issue and being a little too flashy at times. Of all the negatives you could say about a guy, that’s the best one to bring into the UW program, since Coach Romar has a long history of reining guys in without stifling their creativity and natural talent.

*Wroten tore his ACL two weeks ago on the football field, and will miss the entire upcoming high school season. Whether he pushes it to get back for AAU ball is an unknown, but he’ll still have his senior season to bounce back. Given his age, it’s a distinct possibility that he comes back at 90-100% of what he was before, but there’s no way to know for sure.

UW’s chances: Wroten just belongs at the Dub. His father went here. He’s a local kid, and he fits into the system here. And, just as Abdul Gaddy might be leaving after his sophomore year, and Venoy Overton is graduating, it would make all the sense in the world to slot Tony into the backcourt. There have been rumors he might want to explore going east to play, but I think this one is going to end happily for us. I’d guess we’ve got a 60% chance of landing Wroten.

recruit b Angelo Chol copyAngelo Chol
Power Forward/Center, Hoover HS (San Diego, CA)
6′8″, 204 lbs.
ESPN rank: #25 overall, #6 Power Forward
Scout.com rank: #32 overall, #5 Center
Video link: here and here

The skinny: Chol is a lefty with a good jump hook who projects to be a skilled shot-blocker. ESPN has compared him with to “a young Chris Bosh.”

UW’s chances: In July, he did an interview with Scout.com and said UW, UCLA and ASU had shown the most interest in him, with UW and ASU offering scholarships. But, Chol said UW was the favorite at this point, pointing to how much he likes Coach Romar. I think there’s a 50% chance of landing Chol.

recruit c Norvel Pelle copyNorvel Pelle
Power Forward/Center, Price HS (Compton, CA)
6′10″, 189 lbs.
ESPN rank: #46 overall, #14 Power Forward
Scout.com rank: #17 overall, #4 Power Forward
Video link (pay link): here

The skinny: Pelle is long and lean and looks like he could be a nightmare as a shot-blocker. I’m seeing a Darnell Gant-type with better hops and a more consistent jump shot, but with less intensity to his game. Also, Pelle’s ceiling seems high. Like, NBA high.

UW’s chances: UCLA and Arizona are on Pelle’s list, but UW is the leading contender as of late August, according to Scout.com. I see this kid in purple, but he’s said that we’ll have to wait until his senior year to find out for sure. I think there’s a 60% chance of landing Pelle.

recruit d Jabari Brown copyJabari Brown
Shooting Guard, Findlay Prep – Henderson, NV (Richmond, CA)
6′3″, 185 lbs.
ESPN rank: #58 overall, #20 Shooting Guard
Scout.com rank: #57 overall, #12 Shooting Guard
Video links: here and here

The skinny: A true slasher with a good mid-range jumper, Brown is sometimes described as a combo guard, but seems more suited to the shooting guard spot. The biggest knock on him seems to be that he’s not a long player and that his body isn’t prototypical for a big-time college baller.

UW’s chances: At this point, there’s nothing to tell me that we’ve got any better chance at Brown than the nine other schools (including the Arizona schools, the Oregon schools and Cal) on his list. I think there’s a 10% chance of landing Brown.

recruit e Gary Bell copyGary Bell, Jr.
Shooting Guard, Kentridge HS (Kent, WA)
6′1″, 175 lbs.
ESPN rank: #28 Shooting Guard (actually, ESPN has him mislabeled as a PF, but based on his rating, he’d come out about #28)
Scout.com rank: #75 overall, #17 Shooting Guard
Video link: here

The skinny: An under-sized shooting guard, word out of his AAU games this summer was that Bell was putting in time at the point guard position too. His stock seemed to rise more than other 20’11 classmates this summer as he continued to develop a more consistent jump shot.

UW’s chances: UW is one of three schools to offer Bell as scholarship at this point (Cal and Gonzaga are the others), but he’s in no hurry to make a choice, which means it could be a year before we know anything. He has mentioned UW in interviews, and he is a local kid. I’m going to guess, assuming we’ve got enough spots left, we have a 40% chance of landing Bell.

recruit f Byron Wesley copyByron Wesley
Small Forward, Etiwanda HS (Etiwanda, CA)
6′5″, 190 lbs.
ESPN rank: #8 Small Forward
Scout.com rank: #74 overall, #16 Small Forward

The skinny: Lauded for his inside/outside game, Wesley is a solid jump-shooter with a good game in the post. Noted for his hard work at both ends of the court, Wesley has been criticized for jacking up too many three-balls.

UW’s chances: UW is in the mix for Wesley, although so are several other schools. Wesley named Wake Forest the favorite back in January, and says he might choose early just to get it over with. Who knows, but I feel like this kid is a longshot for us. I think we have a 5% chance of landing Wesley.

recruit g spencer dinwiddie copySpencer Dinwiddie
Point Guard, Taft HS (Woodland Hills, CA)
6’3″, 160 lbs.
ESPN rank: #19 Point Guard
Video link: here

The skinny: Rail thin, but with time to grow into his long frame, Dinwiddie would fit well into UW’s go-go-go system. His improving jump shot will serve as a good accompaniment to his slashing style if he’s able to bulk up so he can better take a hit on his way to the hoop.

UW’s chances: I hear Spencer’s name bandied about in Seattle more than recruits like Brown or Wesley. We’re on his list of favorites along with four other Pac-10 schools and Pepperdine (don’t tell me you wouldn’t at least consider playing in Malibu). All said, there’s enough buzz here for me to say we’ve got a 20% chance of landing Dinwiddie if some of our more high-profile point guard options don’t pan out.

recruit h Christian Behrens copyChristian Behrens
Forward, Tahoma HS (Maple Valley, WA)
6’8, 190 lbs
ESPN rank: #22 Power Forward
Video link (captions will clue you into which player he is): here

The skinny: Behrens will likely need to bulk up wherever he plays, but particularly to hang in a major conference. But, his length, athleticism and defensive instincts should help make him a success wherever he plays.

UW’s chances: Christian told us recently that he had a long list of schools recruiting him, including UW, but that he hadn’t ordered his list yet at all. I don’t get a sense that we’re in any kind of driver’s seat here, but he is a Washington kid, so I’ll say we’ve got a 15% chance of landing Behrens.

And here are some other names loosely linked with UW who could become more serious possibilities in the coming weeks and months. When they do, you’ll hear it here:

Nick Johnson: ESPN’s #24 prospect in the entire 2011 class, Johnson will play for Findlay Prep this season. The combo guard would’ve been the second player listed above if I had any sense that UW was something more than a needle in a haystack of schools in the running. Johnson looks to be warmest to the two Arizona schools at this point in the process, but will likely wait until next summer to narrow his list further.

Darius Perkins: A smallish shooting guard (6’0″) with a sweet stroke, Perkins has suffered in the past from bad shot selection and too many turnovers. The Florida baller hasn’t tipped his hand much as to the front-runners recruiting him, but at least one major site includes UW on the list of possibilities.

Jonathan Davis: Davis is a 6’5″ forward out of Simi Valley, CA. Looks like he’s pretty sweet on ASU at this point, but a year ago, he did list UW as one of the schools going after him.

Ryan Anderson: Anderson, out of Long Beach, CA, is a skilled power forward still growing into his frame. Not projected to be a banger, he’s said to have good range from 16-18 feet. No sense of where UW ranks on his list, or how seriously he’s on the Dawgs’ radar.

Kiwi Gardner: ESPN’s #52 point guard in the 2011 class, Gardner is a guard from Manteca, CA, and he’s quite small at this point (5’7″, 150 lbs.) but Coach Romar doesn’t tend to shy away from mini-guards. Seems like Kiwi might be part of our backup plan for 2011 if some of the more prestigious recruits spurn the Dub.

Darius Nelson: A fast-rising 6’5″ forward prospect out of Sacramento, Darius is still very early in the process, and considering a host of schools back east, as well as some in the Pac-10.

Hey, thanks for coming!
