Central Washington

landry copyCouldn’t get everything into my game story, which you can read in its entirety at UDubSports.com, so I wanted to post a few more of my observations from the game.

All in all, a better showing than it could have been if we’d played a stronger opponent. Here’s some more of what I saw:

  • This was my first time sitting on press row, and being a part of the post-game press conference, and writing a story right after a game, etc. Really good time, and plenty of details about the experience that I’m looking forward to sharing in a post soon.
  • Walk-on Brendan Sherrer was in street clothes, even though it was announced this week that he’d be added to the roster and would be dressing for games. He’s long, but not particularly stocky.
  • The Central Washington kids looked very happy and excited in pre-game warmups, and I was thinking about how this exhibition may be the biggest game some of these guys ever play in. They certainly didn’t look happy, though, once the game began and even getting the ball up the court became so difficult.
  • Venoy Overton said that he’d worked on his shooting a lot over the summer. He played very well tonight, and only turned the ball over once, which was huge for him. But, I was a little concerned to see him launch three three-pointers (he hit one).  Quincy also shot three threes, hitting one as well. The Dawgs went 5-21 from beyond the arc on the night.
  • Isaiah definitely put on some muscle this summer.
  • Scott Suggs just doesn’t look like an assertive ballplayer out there. He’s too content to swing the ball around when it comes to him and got beat a few times on defense. He had every chance to distinguish himself tonight, playing 15 minutes, but didn’t.
  • If there’s one Husky who needs most to get off to a good start, it’s MBA. He went 1-6 from the field and missed all three of his free throws. The 10 rebounds were nice, but based on tonight, I’m worried if we think MBA is our third scoring option.
  • The first 12 minutes of the game we UGLY. The teams combined to shoot 9-40 during the game’s opening stretch.
  • Abdul Gaddy’s defense needs work. He’s trying, but the dropoff between him and Venoy is ridiculous.
  • Central Washington guard Austin Dunn is a dead ringer for Jesse Plemons, the dude who plays Landry on “Friday Night Lights.” Dead. Ringer.
  • We only won the second half by four points. Sure, Coach was messing with the rotation, (we even had Scott Suggs, C.J. Wilcox and Elston Turner out on the floor together for a little bit), but any five of our guys should’ve been able to outscore Central by more than four over 20 minutes.
  • Here’s where everyone rated against my expectations coming in:

Abdul Gaddy: performed slightly worse than I expected, but only because his defense was not strong.

Venoy Overtain: way better what I expected.

Isaiah Thomas: exactly as expected.

Scott Suggs: worse than I expected. Can’t see him getting minutes on this team right now.

C.J. Wilcox: about what I expected. He shot 0-3 from deep, but that’s going to happen. If Elston Turner plays well, I think C.J. will be used sparingly.

Elston Turner: worse than expected. He really didn’t look good tonight, missing all four of his shots, and being generally uninvolved in the action.

Quincy Pondexter: maybe a tiny bit worse than expected, if only because I didn’t see him take control much on the offensive end in a few spots where he could’ve.

Clarence Trent: a little better than expected. Six points, five boards, three out of four from the field. He operated well in the post last night and in transition.

Darnell Gant: exactly what I expected. Stronger, and more aggressive on the boards, with about 15 extra pounds of muscle.

Matthew Bryan-Amaning: worse than expected, particularly on offense.

Tyreese Breshers: SO much better than expected. Visions of Brockman danced in my head watching him in the post.

Thanks for coming!!

The Huskies defeated the Central Washington Wildcats 77-48 tonight at Bank of America Arena. It was the only preseason game for the Huskies, who begin the regular season on Friday, November 13th at home against Wright State.

The least you should know:

The Huskies shot terribly in the first half, but led 43-18 at the break. While the Dawgs only outscored Central by four in the second half, there were a few stretches where the offense looked to be in midseason form behind freshman Abdul Gaddy. . .

UW CWU preview copyThe Huskies will take on the Division II Central Washington Wildcats Wednesday night at Bank of America Arena at 7:00 PM. This will be the only preseason game for the Huskies who begin their regular season Friday, November 13th, at home against Wright State.

The game will not be broadcast on television or radio. Tickets are still available through GoHuskies.com for only $10.

What you need to know about the Huskies:

This is your first chance to see our 2009/10 team function as a unit, and marks the competitive debuts of Abdul Gaddy, Clarence Trent, C.J. Wilcox, Tyreese Breshers and walk-on Brendan Sherrer in Husky uniforms.

Justin Holiday is expected to be back around the time of the regular season opener, but will likely be out for this game.

Projected lineup: G – Venoy Overton, G – Isaiah Thomas, F – Quincy Pondexter, F – Darnell Gant, F – Matthew Bryan-Amaning

What you need to know about Central Washingtion:

Central plays in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and is located in Ellensburg, Washington. Last season, the Wildcats finished the season with an 18-7 record, but lost in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Here’s a press release from the school announcing that they’ve been picked to finish third in their conference this year.

Coach Greg Sparling begins his fifteenth season with a reloaded roster after losing four of his five starters and his top five scorers.

Junior point guard Jon Clift is the lone returning starter (although wasn’t listed in the projected lineup Coach Sparling shared with us), and sophomore forward Chris Sprinker (7.6 ppg) is the leading scorer to return.

Projected lineup (from Coach Sparling to Montlake Madness): “We are banged up. If we get healthy…”: G – JC Cook, G – Toussaint Tyler, G – Humberto Perez, F – Roby Clyde, F – Chris Sprinker

A quick word from the opposition:

Central’s coach, Greg Sparling, took a moment to answer a few questions from Montlake Madness.

Montlake Madness: What style of basketball can we expect from Central on Wednesday night?

Coach Sparling: We will play hard and together, (and) can shoot the ball well as a team.

MM: What’s your plan to try to keep the game competitive with UW?

CS: UW is a very good team and is nationally ranked. We need to stop UW’s transition. We must defend them off the bounce. And rebound.

MM: Please give me your brief scouting report on the Huskies.

CS: Great in transition and very athletic. They will pressure you on the defensive end. Good rebounding team. Very good in the open court.

The path to victory:

The Huskies shouldn’t have to do anything special, or even play especially well, to win the game. A “win” tonight would be defined as a low-turnover/high-effort performance with a strong showing on the glass.

Also, seeing Tyreese Breshers able to play effectively, despite not being 100% healthy, would be a big win for the Husky faithful.

What I expect:

While UW’s non-conference schedule isn’t exactly filled to the brim with world-beaters, Central begins their season against Portland Bible College and finishes up their non-conference slate with Academy of Art University. We’re simply a bigger program, and should have no problem winning handily against the Wildcats.

This is a great opportunity for UW to work out some of the kinks that we heard whispers about after the St. Mary’s scrimmage, and run through their offense a few times against some live competition.

UW really has no excuse to do anything but dominate this one, and I’m picking an 84-56 victory.

walkA report from the official UW basketball site today announced that 6’9″ sophomore forward Brendan Sherrer will be added to the official roster for the 2009/10 season.

Sherrer played for Archbishop Murphy High School, and, according to the report from the school, “will provide the Huskies some depth down low and be a great practice player for the team.”

Coach Romar also declined to name his starters just yet for Wednesday night’s exhibition game with Central Washington.

cwu woody copyGot a bit of a chuckle out of this report from SportsYakima.com about Central Washington’s early season exhibition games against the Huskies and BYU. If only other college coaches were this honest about the financial impact of playing against larger schools, there’d be a lot less hot air out there:

“It’s definitely an economic issue,” Sparling said Tuesday. “We’re fortunate that the University of Washington wants to play us, and also BYU gave us a very good guarantee. There’s no second guessing yourself. You just jump in and walk away with a lot of money.”

Then, the coach expresses concern over what I take to mean he’s imagining will be horrific losses to the Dawgs and BYU:

“The biggest thing when you play back-to-back against that caliber of team is you don’t want to get your confidence shaken.”

What happened to that “any given Sunday” approach to coaching, where even a small D-II team in Ellensburg at least pretended they had a chance against a bigger, stronger foe? I know it’s D-II, but who’s coaching this team, Woody Allen?

Anyhow, this game is ruined for me now. How can I be satisfied with anything less than a 50-point margin of victory for the Dawgs, right?

Hey, thanks for coming!
