Brett Kingma? Really??
I’m not knocking the 6’1” point guard from Jackson High, but I can’t quite seem to understand how he fits into the Huskies long term plans. With four scholarships available (not including Kevin Davis) it’s a bit shocking that we could potentially be giving one up to a guy with only Ryan Appleby’s game (no offense Ryan). Let’s take a deeper look into what Romar might be seeing in this guy.
Name: Brett Kingma
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 160 lbs.
Position: PG
Class: 2011
ESPN Rise Ranking Overall: PG #67
Location: Mill Creek, Washington
AAU Team(s): Friends of Hoop
High School Team: Jackson High School
Interested Schools: Oregon, BYU, Colorado State, Pepperdine, Seattle U, Vanderbilt, Washington
If you haven’t seen him, here are a couple decent highlight videos:
What’s His Game Like?
The short answer is Ryan Appleby with average defense. The long answer is a bit more complicated. His shot is a thing of beauty. His quick release and ability to shoot of the dribble are incredible and he is one of the best in the nation in that respect. His shot can be streaky at times (both good and bad) and he can shoot his team out of games or back in them. Let me break him down some more:
- Speed: Above average up and down the court and his ability to pass or shoot on the fast break is what makes you love Brett.
- Quickness: He has worked hard on improving his first step it has shown. He can beat opponents off the dribble at times, but I don’t see it translating to a positive skill in college.
- Shot: Superb release with deadly range. This is by far his best skill. He can catch and shoot as well as off the dribble. Streaky at times, but who isn’t?
- Defense: Better than Appleby, but nothing special. He can pressure the ball at the point but doesn’t share the quickness that most Pac-10 point guards will have.
- Passing: Averages only four assists in high school, but has good vision and sees the passing lanes well. Projects to the point more the shooting guard for this reason.
- Athleticism: Below average in this category compared to other prospects, but in now way is he out of shape or slow. He has little explosiveness and won’t be throwing down two handers any time soon.
- Potential: He’s a four year player that probably won’t be used as anything but a 8-9th man off the bench until his junior or senior year. However, his work ethic and determination are off the charts. He is a major sleeper prospect who could end up being like Luke Ridnour by the end of his career.
Will UW Get Him?
If there is a real “say-yes-and-it’s-your” offer from Romar then the answer is yes. His sister Kristi is a junior of the UW Women’s Basketball team and he wants “to prove that [he] can play at the highest level and that [he] can do more than just shoot and that [he’s] an elite basketball player that can contribute a lot at the Pac-10 level.”
It seems as if UW would be his ideal school to join. Done and done. He should be a Dawg, right? If this is all true then Kingma is about to become the first official member of the 2011 Husky recruiting class. Unless….
It’s been a while since our last crazy Montlake Madness theory which is based on nothing. Why not launch into another one right now?
An Unsubstantiated Montlake Madness’ Theory (UMMT?)
Going into 2011, the Huskies will be looking for at least two big men to replace the losses of MBA and Holiday (Chol, etc). That leaves two of the four scholarships up for grabs. One is definitely being reserved for Tony Wroten who plays PG/SG. That leaves one left which would be the spot that Kingma would take up. It just seems fishy to me that Romar would take a gamble on Kingma while he has the fame/popularity/success to land a higher skilled player. Now it’s theory time. What is the offer to Kingma is a conditional one? In other words, Romar told him the scholarship is his if a certain number of other players turn him down (Brown, Carson, Stewart, etc.). Especially with a guy like Hikeem Stewart (recruiting profile to come soon) being a far better skilled point guard, in my opinion, I don’t know why we would potentially skip over him and sign Kingma. I trust Romar more than I trust anyone, but this one is a HUGE head scratcher. Now it’s possible we sign more than two guards, but with a UW team that already is deep at guard I can’t possibly see that happening. My advice is to keep a close eye on the Kingma situation as it could be an indicator of how well the recruiting of some other guards around the west coast is going.

yeah no offense to Brett but i dont see any potential in him. i dont see what Romar sees in him. and offering him a scholly with the potential class we have this year… if Kingma does end up being a star, i will eat my words.

Get your facts right and watch the kid before you try to evaluate him.
“Below average in this category compared to other prospects, but in now way is he out of shape or slow. He has little explosiveness and won’t be throwing down two handers any time soon.”
I’ve seen him dunk 2 hands EASY in a game and by no means is he a blur, but he is very fast. Don’t assume that he’s unnathletic just because he is white. -
How does Brett Kingma compare to Luke Ridnour, Steve Nash, and John Stockton at similar ages (summer before high school senior year).
Why hasn’t Brett received an offer from Gonzaga or WSU or Oregon?
-
@oldtacomadawg – Im sure he compares equally to all of them in high school, but those are the cream of the crop and its hard to expect to see Kingma end up as good as them. Look at the schools those three went to, Oregon, Santa Clara, and Gonzaga. Almost every coach in America missed those guys.
And Brett has received an offer from Oregon, but the missing WSU offer is strange.
-
Any chance he simply joins the team as a walk-on???
-
Kingma? I guess lots of good teams have that token white guy shooter (Appleby was a key guy in 2006), but he seems like a liability on defense, and one dimensional on offense. If he becomes a Dawg, he will get my support 100%, but it probably means we miss on Jabari Brown and/or Wroten…or Kiwi Gardner, or Hikeem Stewart…all of which seem like better options for Romar’s style of play.
-
I don’t like him. I’ve seen him play 3 times and all I see is him hog the ball and throw up shots from deep. I did see Romar and his crew along with C$ there scouting him once. But mannnnn I don’t want him at UDub! Plus I can’t stand Jackson, I don’t know if I could bring myself to root for Kingma.
-
IT tweeted today that he’s trying to go to the League next year. One has to wonder if Romar already knows this and offered Kingma because of it.
-
Ball hogs don’t seem to fit Romar’s system.
-
Geez, easy on the kid. I’m sure his family reads these things. I think Romar knows what he is doing. A lot of colleges are offering him now. He must have improved this summer. Jim Marsh had him work on some things and it appears that he has. High school ball is way different.
-
Strange that Gonzaga hasn’t offered. The Zag empire was built on the backs of Brett Kingmas.

It’s funny how White players get compared to White players and Black players get compared to Black players. No offense, but some of these comparisons seem silly. Nash and Stockton were brilliant point guards. They have more in common with Magic Johnson then with Kingma or Appleby.
What I want to know is whether this guy could become another (Salim or Damon) Stoudamire. More importantly, I want to know more about his consistency. I loved watching Appleby play (although not as much as my wife did) but I often found his game frustrating. You never knew when he would make a shot. He could nail a tough three pointer, and then miss a wide open one. Personally, I would much rather have a guy who can almost always make an open three. It’s nice to have a quick release (like Damon) but I would settle for a guy like Steve Kerr, who simply made the big shot when left alone. If Kingma’s shot is inconsistent because he is trying to make tough shots (like Kobe does) then I can live with it. Romar can simply tell him not to take that type of shot. But if he has trouble nailing the open three, then I would rather have a longer, quicker player (another Holiday, if you will).
As to the value of a guy who is mainly a shooter, not a passer (or much of a defender) I refer you to the previous paragraph. All three of the Arizona players were great, and those were great years for Arizona. There is nothing wrong with having a specialist on your team.
One more thing in defense of this guy: He plays for a winner. Jackson made it to the final, losing only to a much bigger Kentwood team. I don’t watch much high school basketball, so maybe his teammates carried him, but I don’t think so.
-
I lost all faith in this offer when watching his first highlight video which had him missing about half of the shots he was taking.
Seems like common sense that a highlight video should include makes, makes, and more makes – not missed runners in the lane…

Romar is setting the kid up to be a specialist… we need a zone buster – like a Tre Simmons or Applebee. Assuming Suggs is that guy this year, Kingma will be that guys down the road. In man to man stuff, he will rarely see the floor… we need more than a bunch of fast guards that can dunk. More and more we are seeing zone – we need guys who can break it down – look at Duke – they always have a small white zone buster.
Maddness – can we get an update on the rumblings out of the ville that SIVA might transfer to the UDUB? I really like this kid – he would fit perfect into our system – him and Wroten would be a SICK backcourt. Get an phone call going to him… something – lets break this story. Does he hoop with the local guys in the summer? -
@ddogg: we do have zone busters. Wilcox, suggs, and ross.
-
we have no idea about wilcox and ross…. sure it’s easy to shoot in open gym and practice – but wait until your have a 6’5″ dude from UCLA in your face… I would not just expect guys like Ross will be automatic zone busters the second they hit the floor. Wilcox – more likely… but you figure after Kingma resshirts – we are talking about using him for the 2014/15 seasons.
Having a bunch of guys that do the same thing is the reason why Elston transferred. It’s good to get the program to the point of having a couple specialists on the team – that is called depth.
Now if we can just land Zack Banner next year for football and a banger on Bball – he would be our rebound specialist – 6ft9in, 310 lbs that can run!! The dude will be the highest rated Oline recruit ever in the state of WA. -
Unfortunately, with extreme confidence I can assure you Siva isn’t transferring and that ddogg is talking out of his rear
-
Jim – I actually read that same report over your MyNorthwest Blog. That is the only place I saw that news on SIVA. It seems very far fetched at the moment because Siva will be in line for a starting role this year with Edgar Sosa graduating.

Glad Kingma is coming to Oregon…Washington didn’t want him/need him anyway. I think he will be like a Luke Ridnour, well before his senior year.
