Big win last night for the Dawgs. . . So long as they can follow it up with a victory Tuesday against a much tougher opponent, Texas A&M.
Here’s some more thoughts on the Huskies’ 89-54 win over Portland Saturday night:
Tonight, we saw Venoy Overton defense circa 2008/2009. Yes, he’s our better point guard right now, but I still like him off the bench. The energy he brings, preying on a slightly tired opposing backcourt, just can’t be replicated when he starts.
Pondexter looks downright Ewing-esque with his play along the baseline lately. Spotting up, fading away, turning around — he’s becoming a truly dangerous shooter from that part of the floor.
Every time Isaiah hit a three tonight, he made an okay sign and then brought it up to his eye. Not sure what that was all about.
I know it’s picky, and maybe I noticed because Portland only managed 17 points in the first half, but four of those points came when the Huskies got beat backdoor.
Venoy Overton thoroughly dominated T.J. Campbell tonight. I was surprised when I looked at the stat sheet after the game and saw that Campbell only had six turnovers. It felt like something bad happened every time T.J. touched the ball.
MBA got his goaltend again tonight! I wish they kept a goaltending stat, because I think Matthew is leading the country.
Saw a bit of frustration or resignation on Abdul Gaddy’s face tonight as he walked back to the bench after his fourth foul. He’s looking better in a lot of ways, and as coach pointed out, they do play a little more organized with Abdul out there. But, tonight was the first time it looked to me like his semi-slow start was starting to get to him.
Coach said he normally wouldn’t switch out four guys during his first substitution, but I actually liked the hockey-style line change. He brought in Overton, Suggs, Holiday, and Breshers for all of the starters except Isaiah. It’s certainly not textbook coaching, but a good way, I think, to throw the other team a complete change-up.
I loved the Turner/Suggs combo tonight. They combined for 20 points and both looked very strong on the defensive end.
It didn’t show up in the stat sheet tonight, but I think defending bigger players is going to be a problem for the Huskies all season long. Despite the shotblocking/goaltending ability, MBA isn’t a great man-to-man defender. Darnell Gant excels mostly when he has a size advantage. And Tyreese Breshers still picks up too many ticky-tack fouls.
We saw Breshers’ up-and-under move a couple of times tonight and it looked great. He seems like he’s a big game away from putting it all together, and even looked a little more explosive when he jumped tonight than earlier in the season.
Thanks for coming!

Awesome game for IT. Probably the best line score of his career with NO turnovers and I don’t remember seeing him drive into multiple defenders.
It’s fun watching Suggs gain confidence. There is still room for improvement though. If and when he gains enough strength and confidence to drive to the hoop he will be a real force. For now just hitting the open jumper, making solid passes and playing good d is enough of a contribution.
Really really like Trent. He’s sort of a big Overton in that when he’s in there he’s always in the mix. In only five minutes he gets 4 points, 3 rebounds and a steal. In addition he could have had a couple of assists. He hit Brashers with a great pass down under that resulted in a foul and also hit Holiday(?) who missed an open 12 footer. The guy just deserves more minutes.
I will disagree with the poster who compared Trent to a lovable golden retriever. He’s more of a labradoodle.

Scott Suggs FTW!!!! Oh and Turner looked really good on defense too. Hustle? Confidence? Romar on his ass? Whatever the case, if he shoots and plays D, he gets minutes. I kind of like the lineup of one of the three PG, ET, Suggs, Holiday, and a big man. Tall, athletic, shooting, disruptive on defense. Allows Q to sit and rest for a minute and not take a serious step back in production. Obviously not ideal against certain matchups.

Sorry, but MBA is not a basketball player. At least not of Pac-10 caliber! Too many times he looks totally lost on the floor. He doesn’t seem to have a sense of where he is at when he gets the ball. He doens’t look any better than he did last year. I too feel that Gaddy, at some point, will be a good basketball player. But at this time, he is way behind IT when IT was a freshman last year. I feel he will have a high learning curve going from a Tacoma gym to playing with all the big boys.

Isaiah is almost two years older than Gaddy and had played a year in the prep school ranks back east, which is an accelerated program. Give Gaddy a year to get his feet under him and I think by this time next year, UW will have a player that looks every bit of what people said they would get in Abdul.

I have to give Romar a lot of credit. I had given up hope for Scott Suggs as a productive member of this rotation. I even criticized Romar for sticking with him too many times. I think I was wrong. He can shoot. For the Huskies to beat good teams, we need guys who can knock down shots. Suggs is going to keep getting minutes, especially against teams set on beating the Huskies a zone defense.
I think we may need to play 11 guys all year long. Crazy, but they all bring something totally different to the mix. Amazing how different each player is….
Gaddy needs to continue to start. It just works better.

Who cares what we do against these weak no conference teams. MBA still makes bad decisions against good teams and without anyone down low worth anything we are bad. I think we have potential, but im not satisfied with beating up on weak teams. We need to look tward the tournament, and unless we get smarter as a team we will lose in the second round again.

IT actually was at South Kent School for two years: his senior year of high school plus the additional 5th year.

I dont think Isaiah is making an ok sign then bringing it to his eye. I think the meaning of that sign is, “I just shot a three in your eye!”
-
We just love beating teams from Oregon. Let’s keep that up. How about USC killing Tennessee?
-
And that’s exactly what they’re doing Jordan.

Jackson is right. IT is tellin’ the guy “BOOM! I just drained a trey in your eye fool!”
