Jabari Brown Narrows His List

by Craig Yamada, Editor-In-Chief

Scout.com reported earlier today that highly coveted five star recruit Jabari Brown has widdled his way down to just seven schools vying for his services. Here are his final seven (in no particular order): UW, Cal, Georgia Tech, St. John’s, Oregon,  DePaul, and UCONN.

No, there is no typo here. Kansas is no longer on his list. Shocker right? I definitely think so. For the last month heading into his final AAU tournament, all the buzz was about Rock Chalk Jayhawks. All the rumors were about Jabari wanting to play along side his AAU teammate, Josiah Turner. Maybe something has happened?

Given the latest list Jabari has released, one couldn’t help but get excited about the possibility of a future Wroten and Brown backcourt. Throw in Hikeem Stewart while you are at it, and we can have a party.

It’s still a bit premature to assume anything, but Jabari has only set up one official visit thus far. And whom might that be? Yes, that’s right.  Romar has an in home visit scheduled on 9/9. And Jabari says he’s visiting Montlake on September 18th to watch Jake Locker and the Dawgs take down Nebraska. (Tangent: I am super stoked to hear ASJ is now a Husky)

He is also working on setting up official visits with Oregon, Georgia Tech and Depaul. Cal is in his backyard in Berkeley and will be able to take an unofficial there. Brown is claiming that “all schools are equal right now.”

From my point of view, it will likely be a two horse race between Cal and UW. Mike Montgomery will surely be in Jabari’s ear about how important playing in front of family will be. The upside for the Dawgs: Cal is at least two years away from being a title contender after losing their 4 starters to graduation last year. Don’t be surprised if Steve Lavin becomes part of a bigger conversation with Brown. Lavin has shown much interest in the west coast, especially with their guards as of late. He may be a contender after all is said and done. As it stands, UW fans should feel confident in their standing with Brown as I had last heard that UW was one of his leaders, if not THE leader, before the whole Kansas topic came up in conversations months ago.

Jabari went on to say in the article that he needs to “figure out if he can spend up to four years [at the school he chooses.]” All in all, things are looking bright for Romar if that is the case. Romar is second to none in terms of developing and graduating his talent in four years time with a degree. Jabari has definitely shown his cards to read that he’s not just another one and done. Only time will tell.

From the sounds of things, Brown wants to make his decision in the early signing period after he takes his five official visits. Sounds like a five star that won’t be making us wait to the deadline.

With today’s news, my guess is that we sign the following this year:

1. Wroten

2. Brown

3. Stewart

4. Chol

5. Davis/Kingma

All for now. Thanks for coming!

I hope you’re right about who we get…that would be an awesome class.

  2. craiger’s avatar

well today is my bday and I have already wished for it.

  3. sean’s avatar

Wroten and Brown will come to UW. Other than that I have no idea who else will join them.

  4. Logger’s avatar

Great news. What would you peg the odds of us landing Wroten and Brown?

  5. Gersen’s avatar

On the Jayhawk blogs, they say that Self quit recruiting Brown because he felt that Brown was a heavy, heavy lean to UW. Kind of like what Romar has done with Josiah Turner and Nick Johnson. Of course we would like kids with that talent but if you aren’t going to get them, spend your time on other prospects. Simmons has mentioned that they are close and in contact. I feel good about this one.

  6. ddogg’s avatar

Jabari – If you like your team to lead the league in scoring every year, winning the pac 10 every other year, playing in the sweet 16 or better, playing for a father figure that has sent kids to the NBA every year – UW is the place for you!
Give us a commit during your visit – it will sway Tony to commit as well…. you guys will DOMINATE the West Coast.
Please talk to guys like Brandon Roy and Nate Robinson about how they liked the UW….can Cal build a team around you like Romar will???? hmmmm

  7. Jim Basnight’s avatar

A class of Wroten, Brown, Chol and Davis would be incredible for UW. If they sign all 4 of those guys, I’d be surprised if they don’t take one more, at least by spring. If UW signs Stewart instead of Brown that is also poyentially just as good. Perhaps they take Stewart with that 5th spot or perhaps Kingma is possible. There are a number of other guys out there that are still in the picture like Carson, Tyler Harris, Kevin Bailey and others. Pelle has not ruled himself out either. Things are pretty good in UW recruiting right now.

  8. Griffin’s avatar

I can’t wipe this smile from my face. There is a UW Renaissance going on right now and it’s putting Seattle back on the map. Proud to be a Dawg right now.

  9. bellingham husky’s avatar

Any thoughts on ASJ playing BBall. Anyone ever seen him play? How would this play into who else we recruit?

  10. UWcommit4life’s avatar

Man rinse sure does love to stack up on the guards. That would be an incredible class though. I have a feeling that IT will declare for the draft this year and be a second round pick so that may affect Tony wroten recruit wise. If any UW football recruit that I wanna see play basketball, it would have to be kasen Williams.

  11. UWcommit4life’s avatar

Geez I hate iPhone revising I meant “man romar” instead of “man rinse”…

  12. Logger’s avatar

    Gersen – do you have a link(s)?

  13. UWcommit4life’s avatar

@logger: here is an article that i found has a little section about Jabri. it’s towards the end. http://www2.kusports.com/news/2010/aug/17/coaches-self-gill-challenge-ku-freshmen/

  14. UWcommit4life’s avatar

Also on espn.com it lists UW on the top on his list

  15. Jamal’s avatar

I’d love a write-up of ASJ, since he and Romar have both confirmed he’ll be playing bball

  16. Evan’s avatar

Where did you hear that Jamal?

Oh yeah, lets not get too excited again, remember Terrence Jones? haha, jk lets have a party!

  17. Jim Basnight’s avatar

Romar never commented on “ASJ”. That was the kid saying that Romar told him something. Find me a link and I’ll find you an NCAA violation.

  18. GrantUW’s avatar

Why would it be an NCAA violation for a recruit to inquire with the coach of another sport if he could walk-on when his primary sport is finished? Seems like part of the vetting process to me. Maybe if Romar or Sark said he couldn’t play b-ball but Brown and Barnes were ok with it he would have gone to Texas instead.

  19. craiger’s avatar

Jim is right. Romar can’t technically mention ASJ since he is only a verbal commit at this point.

  20. Jim Basnight’s avatar

Romar can’t comment. He can confirm that UW is recruiting a player or not and that’s about it, from what I can gather from the rules.

  21. GrantUW’s avatar

Romar can’t comment publically, but he can talk to ASJ about walking on, right?

  22. UWcommit4life’s avatar

isnt ASJ too bulky to play basketball? and considering that he is alot better in football than basketball then he probably wont choose to lose weight

  23. UWcommit4life’s avatar

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskymensbasketballblog/2012661973_brandon_roy_reg.html

in the “notes” of this article percy says that ASJ said that he will play basketball but Percy has no backup. coming from percy, thats all i need to believe that.

  24. dawgiedaddy’s avatar

UWcommitt, ASJ is the same height and 5 pounds lighter than a guy named Brockman. Last time I checked the hoops thing was working out pretty well for him.

JB, why wouldn’t Romar take Wroten, Brown and Stewart? Wroten and Brown play different positions, and I have to think that Romar’s going to want to get at least ONE guard out of this class who he knows will be around longer than a year or two. You know he’s gonna sign 5 w/ four spots available. Two posts and three perimeter players.

I don’t see any reason not to sign all three in the fall signing period, if all of them want to committ to UW.

  25. Jim Basnight’s avatar

From what I gather Carson may wait ’til spring to announce. It’s not for sure, but I’m hearing it’s a distinct possibility. I think that UW may take 4 in the fall.

Then, if Davis or someone else doesn’t get in, someone leaves (not likely but maybe Isaiah), someone is a medical casualty (Breshers?), someone graduates with one year left and decides to move on (Gant?) or someone pays their way (really not likely), they then pick up another kid or two in the spring.

Just a wild guess, but if UW signs Wroten, Brown, Chol and Davis, they may not sign Hikeem in the fall, though my guess could be way off here. If Wroten or Brown wait until spring, I think UW picks up another guard and that guy is most likely going to be either Hikeem or Kingma.

If UW doesn’t sign Chol, I’m not sure what they do, but Kevin Bailey is one guy that UW fans could really be happy about down the road. His learning curve is real steep right now.

  26. David’s avatar

Watch out for Georgia Tech. Jabari likes the location and the ACC.

  27. dawgiedaddy’s avatar

“Just a wild guess, but if UW signs Wroten, Brown, Chol and Davis, they may not sign Hikeem in the fall, though my guess could be way off here.”

Why wouldn’t they sign Wroten, Brown, Chol and Stewart, and wait on Davis, since they don’t know if he’ll get in? Granted, they wouldn’t know for sure in the spring either, but they’d probably have a significantly better idea by then, since he would have gotten his grades for fall and winter quarter.

    Seems logical, doesn’t it?

  28. UWcommit4life’s avatar

    Brockman was 240 in college?!

  29. dstern+cbennet+anal’s avatar

did Bo Jackson just commit to UW? I didn’t think so.

  30. Jim Basnight’s avatar

They want to sign Davis asap because they don’t want someone else getting him. I hear that interest in him could blow sky high over the TCC season.

  31. Jim Basnight’s avatar

I think that they will probably sign Stewart in the fall too.

It’s hard for me to feel confident that Jabari and Tony are both going to sign and even if they do UW may feel better about signing 5 in the fall then I’m guessing they are.

My gut today is that UW signing 4 or 5 in the fall is about 50/50 either way.

I’m 99% sure that UW is going to sign Davis, another big or at least a combo forward and two guards, so a worst case scenario would be 4 in my opinion.

I also can’t imagine a scenario where they sign 6 in the fall, unless a couple of those factors that I mentioned previously becomes a reality between now and then.

Also, don’t sleep on UW signing two guards two bigs and a wing. They have been looking at a number oif them, Tyler Harris of NY and Kevin Bailey of CA being the ones that I’m most aware of and there may be more like Goard of WV.

They were watching Jordan Williams of TX closely, but he decided to stay home and play for North Texas right near his home so he could start from day 1 in front of his family and friends.

Also don’t be suprised if DeAndre Daniels looks at UW. He was recruited by the Dawgs, who were on his short list when he committed to the ‘Horns a ways back.

Daniels and Carson are guys that are likely going to wait until spring to sign and the way things are going there may be a lot more. I hate to say it but Tony may play it that way too, but I hope I’m wrong.

For that reason I’m probably leaning more towards UW signing 4 in the fall and staying after those type of kids to see if they can land a big name or two in the spring, like they did this past year with Aziz and Ross.

It’s tough to know for sure, as I’m sure no one really does know what’s really going to happen and excuse me for thinking out loud.

  32. craiger’s avatar

I heard Chol is waiting until Spring as well.

The fall signees will likely be Brown, Stewart and Davis (Wroten… god only knows when)

  33. craiger’s avatar

for those of you hungry for Kevin Davis highlights, check this out from Ball Is Life: http://www.ballislife.com/video/aaron-bright-stanford-commit

Fast forward to the :56 mark for KD’s highlights.

  34. dawgiedaddy’s avatar

Thanks for the info and thoughts, JB. One question, though. Wouldn’t Brown qualify as a “wing” in the 2 guards, 2 bigs and a wing scenario? He’s 6-5 and has the athleticism and of course the range you look for in a 3. Seems like he’d be a classic West Coast swingman.

Good to hear that about Davis, but I’d like to see him do it at least at the CC level before I go too ga-ga over him. But athletic 6-9 guys who can score don’t grow on trees. If it was up to me, if Brown, Wroten, Davis, Chol and Stewart all wanted to sign in the fall, I wouldn’t think twice about it.

  35. Evan’s avatar

I don’t know why you would think twice about that. Aren’t those the 5 main guys Romar and crew is going after? Who would you wait for in the spring? I have a feeling both Wroten and Chol extend their recruitment into the Spring, but we at least get Wroten, if not both, along with Davis, Brown, and Stewart in the fall.

  36. Jim Basnight’s avatar

I’m not going gaga about Davis. I’m just relaying what I’m hearing and reading between the lines when talking to people close to TCC and UW.

Jabari is a good size for a swing man for UW, but he might be a better fit for the two spot.

This is far from over yet, but any combination of Chol, Davis, Daniels, Bailey, Harris, Goard, Wroten, Brown, Stewart, Kingma and Carson would be fine with me, if Romar feels that this is what he wants to do.

Lorenzo has been wrong before, but on points his track record is pretty good. Righjt now UW is right there to become the top power in hoops in the Pac-10 for the foreseeable future and there’s no one to really point to other than Romar as to why.

  37. Jim Basnight’s avatar

Scratch Goard, he just committed to Delaware. That leaves 10 that I’m aware of. Oh yeah, I forgot about Dinwiddie. I’m not sure, but I would doubt he’s that much in the picture though now.

  38. craiger’s avatar

Looks like DeAndre Daniels is re-classifying to 2010. I hear he is visiting UCLA and USC this weekend. But UK is the front runner right now. This process for him will end quickly

  39. ddogg’s avatar

Romar is a class act when it comes to recruiting… kids and parents see that. He will get his men… Believe in the Romar way!!! Although the Kigma deal is a bit of a head scratcher.

  40. UWcommit4life’s avatar

man! everytime espn talks about pac 10 basketball, the main photo is IT.

  41. Evan’s avatar

IT is currently the biggest star in the Pac10 by far, who else would even become close to qualifying? the only other competitive team in the pac last year was cal and they only have 1 returning starter. the best player on a nationally recognized program will be the face of the conference

  42. craiger’s avatar

Cross Jahii Carson off the list. He has just committed to ASU. Glad to hear he is staying in the Pac 10 at least. Bring on Wroten, Brown and Stewart!

  43. Evan’s avatar

Tony Wroten tweeted his top 5(dont know if its in order, but this is the order he listed them):
    Louisville
    Washington
    Kentucky
    UCONN/Villanova
    Miami

Nate Robinson tweeted that Stewart is coming to UW. Stewart didn’t exactly refute the tweet either. I’m fully expecting Stewart to announce for UW unless something drastic happens and there is no longer an offer on the table for him.

  46. craiger’s avatar

i saw that too. I am wondering if Stewart and Wroten will announce together?

Stewart is for sure a Dawg in my book. He even tweeted that Kasen Williams should stay home and be a hometown hero. This could be the first time in a long time where hometown Seattle studs will try and represent their home city in college. Possibly the best 206 representation dating back to Tre, Nate, Broy and Will Conroy.

  47. Evan’s avatar

I now fully expect Wroten and Stewart to announce UW together in the fall. Maybe Nate-Rob will introduce them lol

  48. UWcommit4life’s avatar

hmm… the thing is, i think that with sooo many guards on the huskies’ roster, alot of them will opt to transfer unless we get some one-and-dones. in 2011 the guards on the roster (if IT gets drafted and if we get those recruits) will consist of suggs, gaddy, ross, wilcox, wroten, stewart, brown, and hosley. i know there’s some called depth but still…

  49. craiger’s avatar

UWcommit4life – I totally get where you are coming from. A lot of this is likely going to depend on the versatility of each player. As I mentioned before, Romar typically uses the 2-3 spots interchangeably. And let’s not forget that Terrence Ross is drawing a lot of comparisons on some practice reports to Q-PON in stature. And we all know Q-Pon was a small PF for us, but because of his versatility, he was more of an oversized wing in Romar’s offense. It’s definitely too early to project minutes for the future as we haven’t seen Ross or the newly revamped Scott Suggs in game action yet.

If all three commit, I would assume that Stewart would likely redshirt to save a year for him. Brown and Wroten are both immediate contributors who would figure to have big minutes off the bench. Wroten may even overtake Gaddy on the depth chart if he plays his game during the course of the season. I know some people are saying that Ross could be the odd man out, but I just don’t see that happening given his athletic ability and potential.

The beauty is that we can never have too much talent at the 1-3 spots, especially in the new Romar style offense where the 1-4 spots are all threats from the perimeter.

  50. uwhoop’s avatar

I think Romar’s philosophy is you take as many of the best players that you can get, and the rest will work itself out. The west coast 2011 class has loads of talent at the guard position, and very little talent from the big men. Worst case scenario is that we end up with an all guard class. We’ll be thin on the inside in 2011-2012 with the loss of MBA, but the 2012 class is loaded with big men. These things are cyclical.

If the scenario of a guard-only class did end up a reality, I could see a situation where Romar might run four or even five out. He typical runs three out two in, but he’ll play to his personnel. If the best combination of guys is a set of guards who are 6-1, 6-3, 6-4, 6-5, 6-6 so be it.
