I’m Still Not Giving Up, But What’s Your Post-Huskies’ Rooting Plan?

sad huskyEverything I have to say about the Dawgs this morning would be repetitive. What more can be said about such a disappointing weekend?

I’m certainly not giving up — not with the team only 2 1/2 games back in such an inconsistent league. But, I’ve leveled all of the criticisms I have for right now, and there’s officially nothing the Huskies can do over this four-game homestand to convince me they’re capable of doing anything at all outside of Hec Ed.

February 11th at Cal is the next time my mind will be open to the idea that the Huskies can possibly win a game on the road. Until then, I’m guessing we’ll go 6-5 the rest of the way, lose our first game in the Pac-10 Tournament (since it’s not in our building) and hope on March 14th that the NIT or CBI comes calling.

I am, however, excited to see what Coach has to say during his press conference later today. Will there be a plan to change the team’s fortunes? A change in the lineup or on-court strategy? Looking forward to hearing what Coach has in mind.

For me, this was the weekend when I started to come to terms with the fact that March Madness might be pretty quiet around our way.

I really do enjoy having someone to root for in the Tournament, and it got me wondering, how do other diehard Dawg fans tend to root if the Huskies don’t make the Tournament, or after they’ve been eliminated.

Me? I’d root Pac-10 all the way, since I’m so much more familiar with the teams in our league than the rest of the country. And I’d probably pull for the (few) New York teams that make the Tourney now and then: St. John’s, Manhattan, Binghamton.

What about you? Let me know in the poll below, and expand on your answer if you’d like in the comments section.

When the Huskies' season is over, who do you pull for in the NCAA Tournament? (choose as many as you'd like)

We had really poor shot selection on Saturday….I mean, it’s always been poor, but Saturday was the worst I’ve seen. Why did Holiday take 10 shots!!….including 2 missed 3-point shots? Why??? Anyway…..that’ll have to improve if we want to make any progress.

By the way….I’d like to add that I voted for “any team in the Pac-10″ in the poll above. The caveat I’d like to add is that my vote is actually is “any team in the Pac-10…..EXCEPT for Oregon”.

What a sad turn of events.

Yes, the Pac-10 is pretty wide open, but the problem is that we are just not that good right now. The best we can hope for is to play hard the rest of the season, win all of our games at home, steal a few on the road, and peak during the Pac-10 tourney — and then win it.

Sure, this is wishful thinking, but what fun is it being a fan without being hopeful? Realistically, winning this conference outright pretty much ended this weekend.

As crazy as it sounds, and with all the accolades he received, John Brockman was actually an underrated Husky. He was the glue and he was the biggest piece of the puzzle, all at the same time. Having the beast in the middle sucking up every rebound and scoring inside during cruchtime gave us an identity. Brockman also made the Huskies tough, mentally and physically. Without him, we are a bunch of pieces that don’t seem to fit together in any way.

I know its lame to talk about last year’s team at the end of January, but I think it is very relevant to this year. We never adjusted to Brockman leaving. We didn’t change our style at all. It turns out, our fast up-and-down style doesn’t work without a presence in the middle. The strategy is simply broken without the big man. Its a wheel with only spokes and nothing centering or balancing it. The results are chaos and inconsitency.

I think our collective miscalculation was the thought that we would make up for the loss of Brockman with speed and athleticism. We haven’t.

The rest of this season will be about figuring out who this team is. What is the best way to use these pieces? Can this team change their style entirely in the middle of the season, start to play well and peak late? Thats the best case. Like MM, I am interested to see if Romar sees it that way as well.

What about – “I root for my bracket”?

g-stache – good points on Brockman, but what about Dentmon? Though I never dreamed I’d type this, I think Huskies miss him for some of the same reasons as Brockman (tough mentality, defensive effort, big basket when no one else can score).

  4. Definately agree with you guys about Brockman. He was one of the all time greats! I think they should retire #40 in the next couple years. I think if we had got Charles Garcia this season would have been much different. Cam Diggy pulled a fast one! In Tues. nights game he will be the best player on the court, it’s going to be average player(MBA,Gant) vs. NBA talent(Garcia)! I don’t think we will but if we lose to Seattle U. I’m to start wearing my Jake Locker jersey and get ready for the football season! Let’s get this season turned around! GO DAWGS!

Cougs and select in conference and out of conference schools:

    Teams I’ll root for:

    -UW
    -Cal
-Seattle U. (obviously won’t be in the NCAA tourney this year)
    -Wazzu
-North Carolina (which is having their own issues… Tyler Zeller :-( )
    -St. Mary’s
    -Navy
    -Stanford (if I’m feeling generous)

I used to have an affinity for BYU and Gonzaga but then realized what d-bags their fans tend to be and in the case of GU, their coach is.

My rooting interest in the tournament (in this order):

    -UW
    -Kansas
-Pac-10 Schools (except Oregon and Wazzu)
    -Other teams in tourney
    -WSU

    -Famine
    -Terror

    -Oregon
