sad huskyThe Huskies lost to West Virginia, 69-56, on Thursday night in their NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game. The loss ends the Huskies’ season and Quincy Pondexter’s college career.

I’m bummed out. Super bummed. . . More from our staff writers (and from me) in the coming hours and days. But, I’m curious, what’s your best explanation for the loss? Vote below, but also let us know in the comments section.

Thanks for coming, and thanks for a great season. We’ll be here throughout the off-season (not every day, but we’ll be here). We hope you will be too.

What's YOUR explanation for Thursday's loss to West Virginia?

    Great season for the dawgs!

Reminded me of the Georgetown game. Ugly.

We got beat up on the boards and did not take care of the ball. Pretty simple really. The stats will show both of those points.

One thing I will say and defend. Justin Holiday was the best player on the court. Not even close. Awesome defense, excellent offensive numbers all aroung and just a superb game. Went from fighting for time to maybe our best all around player(a bow to Qpon).

I think the officiating was atrocious. I went back and watched the first half again and there were some really bad calls. That took QP out of the game and changed everything. We will never know what the outcome would have been.

Still a little numb…don’ t know if I can or will ever re-watch to try to figure out what went wrong tonight but it just felt like Huskies weren’t clicking…I didn’t really think it was a lack of effort…it just wasn’t clicking. Was it West Virginia’s defense? Was it playing in the dome? Was it a few early tough calls that got them out of sync? I don’t know…but all in all…the last couple months have been great…once the sting of this loss goes away will definitely look back on the latter half of the season very fondly.

Also…will derive a lot of pleasure thinking about next season…there is a LOT to look forward to!!!

I just want to know if anyone shares my feelings of pure hatred for jay bilas. His east coast bias is unbelievable.

If you ever have the chance to meet and talk to Jay(I did at College Gameday), he is a really nice and funny guy who actually has a lot of respect for the Dawgs.

AHHHHHHHH! When’re we going to get the lucky bounces, it was our turn! Man, I’m so proud of our guys. The fact that I’m upset about us not making the Elite 8 right now is a blessing. We could be in the NIT. I’m so grateful for the way we pulled it together. Remember this pain and build on it Huskies! And stop getting on Romar he is the best coach we have ever had and he will lead us to the NC!

    i second that, howitzer.

We simply beat ourselves. We didnt have the personnel to matchup against their length. Too many turnovers, no offensive putbacks and bad free throw shooting summed up today.

Hats off to J-Holiday who is really getting me excited for next season with his play in this tourney and in this game specifically.

    One comment on the officiating.

The Butler/Holiday call really took away the possibility for a close finish. I don’t really see how anybody with refereeing skills could call that a block but it was a four point gift to WV and maybe a 6 or 8 point swing in the game essentially ending it. Unfortunately it evoked the UConn game officiating.

awful awful reffing. I don’t see how we get 6 offensive fouls against a supposedly ‘stronger’ team. They were draped on our guys all night, no reaches called, they were grabbing jerseys to prevent breakaways. After Romar got the technical, some of the make-up calls and no-calls our way were even worse but the game was out of hand that time. Sucks we lost to the refs. should have been up by 15 at the half.

Very good comments everyone. This game did remind me of Georgetown — a tough loss against a very good team. In both games I thought we should have been up by ten at halftime, which would have allowed us to weather a run by the other team.

Yes, the refs were terrible. I know reffing a game like this is very hard, but that is why the really good refs go by feel, rather than there own split second judgment (unless it is an obvious call). NBA refs get criticized for lots of stuff that makes sense, really. Jordan got away with traveling a lot because he didn’t travel that much. Do you really want to make a mistake on a graceful, athletic play only to be shown that you were wrong on replay. Nope, you don’t, so you let the stars (and often the teams that are hustling and playing better ball) get the benefit of the doubt. Quincy’s second foul (a charge) just shouldn’t have been called. He is our star, a future NBA player and he made an NBA move on that play. The replays showed it was a block, but mainly if it was at all close it should have called a block. No wonder Romar went off when Holiday (our best defensive player if not the best defensive player on the court) gets called for a block when the other guy is backing down. Unbelievable. If you want to call charges all day, fine, then that is a charge.

So many times in this game we saw the best of these dawgs and the worst of these dawgs. Forcing turnover after turnover on one of the best teams in the country. Spectacular. Then seeing Amaning miss two foot shot after two foot shot; or Overton showing bad judgment and making bad turnover after bad turnover (I love Overton, but he kills me sometimes). Oh well, like everyone said, this was a great run and we did lose to a very good team (a team that might win it all).

One last note: The paper said that a contingent of former dawgs attended (Brockman, Hawes and Robinson). I guess Nate was really rough on the refs. You tell ‘em Nate!
