Welcome to a new feature here at Montlake Madness called “Glass Half Full/Glass Half Empty.” We’ve asked two writers to do some analysis on the Huskies’ 82-70 win over Oregon State on Saturday night, one focusing on the positive, and one on the negative.
As I’ve written, you’ll be seeing some new voices on Montlake Madness in the coming weeks as I try to make the site more of a team effort and keep the information and opinion flowing, even as I have less time to personally devote.
Tonight, we welcome “Griffin” and “WhoLetTheDawgsOut,” both making their Montlake Madness debuts. Agree with their points, or not? Let them hear you in the comments section. And, thanks to both guys who we hope to see plenty more from in the future.
Glass Half Full, by Griffin:
Abdul Gaddy: He scored seven points on 3-4 shooting, had two assists, two rebounds, a steal, and only one turnover in 23 minutes. It’s not his box score that shined against the Beavers, but his on-court leadership, considering he’s still only a freshman. Early on, MBA scored and drew a foul and did his “mean-mug” where he gives us all two tickets to the gun show. Gaddy ran up to him, put his hand on MBA’s head and told him to calm down and get re-focused. His leadership skills and knowledge of the game may be second only to Quincy’s on this team. . . and he’s only 18.
Assist-to-turnover ratio against the zone: 17 assists and only seven turnovers on Saturday night. The Huskies will make it to the Pac-10 championship game if they can limit themselves to only seven turnovers when they see a zone defense. I realize that Oregon State’s zone isn’t as good as ASU’s, but the Beavers threw the kitchen sink at the Dawgs, with a 1-3-1, a 2-3, and I may have even seen a 3-2 at one point.
Isaiah Thomas: He shot 66% from the field and 2-5 from three-land. He got into the paint at will and abused the Beavers whenever a mismatch presented itself. If you consider his five assists and only one turnover, I would argue this was his best game in the last month.
MBA: What more can be said? 20 points and 11 rebounds against the Beavers tonight. “Domination” is my word of choice. He’s averaging 13.3 points and 8.1 rebounds in the last eight games. This is a completely different player. He’s like Claire from “Lost”. He started out as a horrible role player that backed away when things got tough. Now? He’s a beast, and everyone needs to keep an eye on him when he’s on the court. Is he the best big man in the Pac-10? Over the last eight games, there’s no question that he is.
Glass Half Empty, by WhoLetTheDawgsOut:
As a fan, it’s hard to be a Debbie Downer after UW’s fourth straight road win, but there’s always room for improvement.
The Dawgs looked like they were scrambling for defensive boards today as Roeland Schaftenaar, Seth Tarver and “Big Baby” Burton pounded away on the offensive glass getting 2nd and 3rd opportunities which kept OSU competitive. Our bigs need to do a better job of getting a body on their defensive assignments in order to go further into the Pac-10 Tourney.
So has been the story all year long, inbounding under our own basket continued to be our Achilles heel as we have been notorious for turning the ball over in these situations. Today was no different with a turnover in the first half and a near-five-second call in the second. Coach Romar must develop a simple inbounds play to set a screen, freeing one of our guards. We don’t need anything flashy. We just need to get the ball in consistently.
The one particular sequence which had me on edge was mid-way through the first half when Romar went with a frontline of Tyreese Breshers and Darnell Gant. During this two-minute stretch, UW looked discombobulated on offense and struggled to find fluidity. Coach experimented with this combo for a couple of minutes, but didn’t repeat this mistake again in the game.
Last but not least, free throws continue to haunt Isaiah Thomas. His 1-3 from the line was the only damper on a brilliant game he played today.
The only other thing I can say for IT is not a hit on his game, but on his swag. We all love his confidence, but can’t quite seem to fall for his Kid ’n Play mini-fro, or the hand running through his hair at the end of the game. Somewhere Will “Confident Not Cocky” Conroy is smiling.

Thanks to Griffin and WhoLetTheDawgsOut. Great job guys!
And, thanks for coming!

Nice work guys, I like the teamwork.
I’m glad you pointed out the inbounds troubles. This is something that is not just happening this year. I can remember it being a problem for several years. We always seem to be moving away from the ball to get open which leads to dangerous passes. It’s a minor thing but every possession is important.
But in all it was a great game by the huskies. I think if we were just starting the PAC-10 season now, with new and improved MBA, we would win the conference and we would be talking about how high of a seed we would get in the NCAA tourney, not if we get in.
-
Great job WhoLetTheDawgsOut…awesome analysis. I hope to see you as a regular writer on Montlake Madness.
-
Andy I agree with you. I see teams playing right now that will be in the tourney and we are just as good if not better. So is ASU. Texas is not that good, this Kentucky/Florida game is awful. Hope we can get in. I wouldn’t want to be some 5 seed team playing us right now.

Way to go Gaddy and MBA and how about Venoy’s 3 3′s! I am a big fan of Gant as well and look for him to step up during the post season. I think Coach Romar likes Turner’s ‘D’ and if he can start just shooting instead of “thinking” then I think he will be fine. Suggs for some reason is not getting minutes. I like his game face and hope Suggs is a large contributor in the post season as well.
As for IT, his game his nearing the best it can be. I just wish he would put more back spin on his outside shots. And finally for Quincy, just like Brockman, he will be missed next year.
Thanks for the new format. This shapes up to be a super post season for the Huskies.
-
One final comment that I left out: I believe Gant can play ‘D’ like Holiday. We need that.
-
Did anyone else watch the boys 4A championship game after the UW/OSU game? Josh Smith looks like a total bust at the next level. He is fat and slow and lacks anything resembling athleticism. There is no way he could run with the Dawgs next year, UCLA can have him.
-
who let the dawgs out.. hopefully we will be jamming to that next Sunday after we get our bid. Great writing fellas.
Hilarious to see Josh Smith play. That guy is huge and not agile. I bet he can do work to some cheeseburgers.
-
Nice analysis by both. The inbounds is incredibly frustrating (texas tech ahhhhh), and perhaps the incarnation of the “Romar often lacks x’s and o’s” argument.
I am starting to believe MBA ’10 = Quincy ’09. I feel we are on the cusp of the realization of incredible ability, athelticism and size, and Matthew may very well be a POY candidate in ’11.
We’re about to be tested in the pac X, and I feel we’ve gotta solve the 1-3-1 (again) and the matchup zone in order to reach the tourney… but if we can… given how dominate MBA has been, with IT and Quincy capable of poppin off any second… who wants to play us?
-
Also, Josh Smith the teh fat. He could possibly lose a ton of weight under a legit strength/conditioning coach and end up being a stud…. but after watching the state tourney I am so glad he didn’t come here. Dude didn’t move at all. He dominated by being bigger and fatter. He has bigger boobs than my wife. We don’t need him sh**ting on our transition game next year. Lemme hear t.jones…
-
Darnell Gant was one of our lock-down defenders last year. I think he can play a role like holiday does. In fact last year holiday came off the bench to fill in for Gant. Don’t know what has happened to him.
Also QPON got robbed. I am so pissed. 5 POW’s, but not POY. I claim shenanigans.
-
Venoying… couldn’t agree more about your call out for Gant. I really think he could be our X-factor in the post season. People tend to forget that our best defensive trio last year consisted of Overton, Holiday, and Gant. There were times where we threw Gant on the toughest defensive assignment (ex: James Harden) and shut him down. He has the length, quickness and the experience to make an impact defensively. Romar really should consider bringing him off the bench before Tyrese Breshers. Breshers may be a diamond in the rough, but I trust Gant in there more for rebounding and not sending the other team to the line.
MBA… what can I say? Everyone is speechless. You truly are Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde this season from start to finish. I know MBA claims he is “not doing anything different,” but he clearly is. He is so much more patient in the post. I love that he is finally pump faking and getting the opposition in the air and using the rim as a second defender. He is not shying away from contact and is taking the ball up strong like a big man should. He just needed to let the game come to him and he is definitely doing that now. Keep it London!
Q-pon, call 911 because you got jacked today. We all know you’re the best. Use this as fuel and prove to the coaches they made a mistake.
-
Hoopswatch… gotta give you credit for the Gant insights as well… didnt see your post until now.
-
Just ask yourself who you would rather have on your squad, Randle or QPON, thats your player of the year.
-
just saw tony wroten’s recent tweets, and it really is looking like he’ll be here in 2011-2012, he even RT’ed my tweet about staying in the NW and not going out East
-
Posted by Percy..looks as though we lost a big fish to the UK Wildcats..sucks..
-
I saw big Josh, and he would never be able to run in our offense. In his defense, he had a knee injury recently and couldn’t do too much cardio. He is a load though and will be a pain. But bring on TJones, he fits perfectly.
-
whats T wroten’s twitter?
-
are you the cove?
-
wrotens twitter is @TWroten5.

Regarding the Terrance Jones rumor. I really don’t know how credible the source is. The excerpt came from a small town newspaper:
” Jones, a five-star recruit who is expected to sign with the University of Kentucky for his freshman year of college next season, scored a game-high 31 points to go with four blocks.”
I won’t believe it until I hear confirmation from his coach or Terrence himself. The way this was phrased, he could be speaking personal opinion. Whoever reported this rumor just is regurgatating a finding from an RSS feed for “Terrence Jones”.
-
the TJ rumor is false, its only 1 small reporter looking for a big break and there are 2-3 more mainstream sources denying it already and someone already talked to TJ(forgot who) on the phone and he denied the rumors.
-
Evan… thanks for the confirmation. Percy sometimes jumps the gun on these things.
Even the way the excerpt is written suggests its personal opinion. Crisis averted.
