The Athletic Department announced today that the men’s basketball team will hold walk-on tryouts on Thursday at 6 PM. The opportunity is only open to full-time UW students. Here’s the link with all the relevant info.
I had a chance to ask Coach Romar about just this at Media Day. When I inquired about the likelihood of the team adding another player, likely by adding one or more walk-ons (non-scholarship ballers), to the team’s 12-man roster. Here’s what he answered:
“No. (pause) I said that too quickly. If there was someone that decided to walk on and help us out that was good enough to push your guys in practice, and be good enough mentally to handle not playing, and not come into my office asking ‘why isn’t (he) starting? I’ve been doing everything. Why aren’t I playing more?’ Then, yeah, we might consider remotely having someone.”

Brandon Roy’s jersey was retired, so “3″ unavailable. Percy Allen noted “One name to keep in mind is Husky receiver Devin Aguilar, who was a standout basketball player at Mullen High in Denver. Aguilar considered going out for football (I think he meant “basketball”) last year before the coaching change and decided to focus on football. Aguilar was was the Colorado Class 5A state tournament MVP in 2006 and reportedly had offers from Iowa State, Utah and Wichita State for basketball.”
Couple other footballers, Jermaine Kearse & Kavario Middleton were decent basketball players at Lakes High. No doubt there are other Husky footballers who played high school basketball. Which of them is interested in trying out and has the time for basketball? In football, “invited” walk-ons are common. Is that done in basketball, and could it be done at UW? A high school basketball star who didn’t get a scholarship, sitting at home or even playing for a D2 or D3 or CC team , could he be invited and quickly enrolled so he could walk on? Maybe

OT, is there a way to order the jersey with a preferred name and number?
