An Open Letter to Scott Suggs

Suggs smallThis has been a long time coming, so here goes. . .

Dear Scott,

In light of your play recently, and more so, in light of the way you’ve handled yourself on the court this season, I feel that owe you an apology. Let me explain.

Let’s face it: last season, you looked very much like the freshman you were. You seemed tentative, small, and unready for the Pac-10. Few Husky fans saw enough from you to expect much more than minor improvement coming into your sophomore season.

And, even leaving out the questions about your capability to develop into a real contributor on the team, fans prognosticating about the Huskies’ rotation for this season had you buried at the end of the bench. The prevailing sentiment early on was that you’d be behind all of the team’s guards, including eventual-redshirt C.J. Wilcox, on the Husky depth chart.

My biggest criticism was based on the way you looked out there, as much as anything about your play. After all, we didn’t see much of you stat-wise in your limited minutes last season, but we certainly saw plenty of The Scott Suggs Face, a combination of being overwhelmed and under-confident.

Even as you buried three-pointers in each of the Huskies’ first three games this year, I didn’t think you looked the part, and up until recently, I was frequently writing that I wanted to see more Elston Turner and less Scott Suggs. I was still seeing what I thought was The Suggs Face. Less often, but still. . .

Recently, though, I’ve gotten to see a lot of you and a lot of Elston on the court. I love the big, how’d-he-do-that 27-footer Elston sometimes drops, but not nearly as much as the sweet stroke you’ve been steadily displaying, shot-after-shot. And, that scared look is gone. Somewhere along the line, Mr. Missouri Basketball carved himself out a nice little niche as the Huskies’ best shooter.

I’ve seen every single shot the team has taken this season. When that ball goes up, every fan, consciously or not — and having nothing to do with statistics — makes an instant prediction of success or failure. Here’s the entire list of ballers on this Husky team who make me think, in that brief instant the ball is in the air, “yeah, this one’s going in”:

Quincy Pondexter

Scott Suggs

That’s it. Consider this: Isaiah Thomas has taken 38 more three-pointers than you, Scott, and only hit four more!

You’ve even become relatively emotive, which lets me know you’ve got the confidence to stand out a bit. And, your defense is not bad.

Bottom line, it’s gotten to the point where we are decisively a better offensive team when you are on the floor. (According to basketball-statistics.com’s new feature, you have the second-highest plus-minus rating on the team this season.)

Now, don’t go thinking I’m saying you’re good to go, and can stop working hard. My wish list for you would be: 20 extra pounds, a little bit more moving when you’re off the ball, and a true gunslinger’s mentality to shoot your way out of it on nights when it doesn’t come so easy (although lately, it looks like you have the green light you need).

So Scott, please let this serve as my official apology. I can’t say I’ll never write something negative about you again, because I will. But, I’ll never write that you don’t belong on the court with these guys, because you do.

And, thanks too for being one of the first Huskies willing to talk to Montlake Madness. Those early interviews helped us gain a small readership, which eventually became a less-small readership, and I try not to forget when someone does something they didn’t have to do for me.

Sincerely,
Josh

Josh, great letter. I totally agree that Quincy and Suggs are the 2 players where I am cheering as the ball goes up well before it gets through the hoop. I am definitely most confident in their shots. Keep up the good work!

100% agree. Suggs has shown a surprising consistency so far this year. Like Dan and you say, he and Quincy are the only two consistent shooters that I have confidence in. Thanks Josh, and thank you Scott!

Great letter, except you used the word “we” a lot in that letter which made me feel like you were implying I felt the same way you did. I always had faith that Scott Suggs would blossom into the player he is, I didn’t expect it so soon though. Looking at his high school career stats, height, and athletic ability, and his long lanky arms I expected to get a good player out of him. Best part is he will be here all 4 years. As I am writing this I am thinking he will end up like Pondexter but with a much better 3 point shot. Maybe thats a stretch but if he can put on weight and learn to drive….the sky is the limit on what he can do.

I’ll sugg(est) 10 pounds of muscle and a few slashing drives to the hoop with finishes.

I like the link. +/- stats are interesting. I like to see IT is #1, and by a long shot. He’s easy to get down on, but I really think he takes a lot of preasure off other guys. Don’t forget how much better we got last year witth the addition of IT.

I don’t know if Suggs and Holliday have GFs or not but if they do then those ladies should have a “Lets put 10 pounds of flesh on our boyfriends” cook off competition….payoff could be a pro contract (if not in the NBA, maybe overseas somewhere)…get on it ladies..

Great letter…I like the example of players that give you confidence when the ball leaves their hands, you’re 100% correct. Similarly, I often evaluate players based on, “how do I feel when I see them sitting at the scorer’s table waiting to go in?”. Suggs has shot to the top of the charts in the category for me as well.

Personally I should write a similar letter to Justin Holiday. Though I want the record to show I always have been a fan of his, I didn’t think he brought enough to the table to earn a lot of minutes, not to mention starter’s minutes…but I concede I was 100% wrong…he has turned into one of the most integral pieces to Huskies success w/ his hustle, rebounding, decisions and defense.

BTW – I don’t think it matter’s that you allow two ‘Paul’s’ because who really cares…but I’m the louder more obnoxious Paul…not the polite Paul above.

I’d like to add a bit more opinion on Suggs and that is I believe his potential is significantly higher than his current offerings. It would nice to have a statistic for jumpshot release height. I think Suggs would be well over 9′ but I’m just guessing. That’s one of the reasons his shot is so smooth because there is very little danger of a block. Even Turner at 6’3″ is likely close to a foot shorter on his release point due to Sugg’s arm length.

In his high school youtube videos Suggs had lots of action finishing at the hoop and that was with both hands. I suppose the reason we haven’t seen that yet is because people like Leonard Washington are patroling the lane. An extra bit of muscle and confidence allowing Suggs to finish at the hoop will make his three and his pull up jumper that much more effective. If/when that happens we could see an all Pac-10 or higher player.

I agree Howitzer…I too watched that h.s. video of Suggs and loved his soft touch on his finishes (a bit of Gervin, don’t you think?) – I’ve kept waiting to see him bring that to the collegiate level…to the degree that when he had that break-away against ASU I actually thought we’d finally see that smooth finish in action! And then…he instead chose to make an incredible off the rim pass to Holiday! :-)

Yeah, Paul, ditto on Justin Holiday. I was right that Suggs would emerge this year, but dead wrong that it would be at Holiday’s expense. I did expect a little more from Elston Turner, but he actually has been pretty productive too in limited PT. The odd man out seems to be Darnell Gant. I guess I just didn’t think this team could afford to go w/ only 2 true post players in the regular rotation. But Q, Isaiah, Breshers, Gaddy, Holiday, Venoy, Suggs, MBA and ET are the best 9 players, and given the lack of quality bigs in the pacx conference, it seems to be working (at least at home). I’m not so sure that it will work in the NCAA Tournament, if we’re lucky enough to get there.

It’s interesting to note that for two straight years, the freshman who ended up left out of the rotation has come on the next year to play a major role. First Holiday last year, and now Suggs. I’m expecting a similar leap out of Clarence Trent next season.

I also owe Suggs an apology. Because he has a cool moustache, too…and I left him out of the facial hair conversation completely. Now I watch Gant at the end of the bench and wish I would have called myself SuggsMoustache.

George Gervin is a great comparison. I was thinking Gus Williams but Gervin is closer to the body type and style of play. Gus had that cockeyed jumper but he could sure finish on the break.

Steve Kelley should read this for an idea of how to give a REAL apology.
