2011 Recruiting Profile: Hikeem Stewart

Yes, Seattle, it is yet another Stewart. And yes, this is yet another twin. And YES, this is the younger twin brother of older twin brothers Loderick and Roderick. Hikeem Stewart of Rainier Beach High School has been the talk of the town as of late with his recent tournament performances.

He is gaining momentum in his recruiting following a strong showing during his AAU summer tourneys. Playing in the backcourt with before mentioned Brett Kingma (recent UW offer), on the FOH squad, he helped lead his team to the Final Four in the Las Vegas Fab 48 tournament. The Oakland Soldiers won this tourney. (More to come on them soon.)

From the few highlights I have seen on Hikeem Stewart, he’s a 2 guard  with great ball handling skills that sees the floor very well. Hikeem says he models his game after Brandon Roy. His court vision has allowed him to showcase some flashy passes to his teammates in the half court set as well in transition, much like Tony Wroten. He has the athletic ability to create his own shot and beat his man off the dribble.  He has been noted to have decent range as he pulls up for jumpers. His three point range is another area where Hikeem has excelled as he can stick it from anywhere beyond the arc off the bounce.  Sounds like yet another athletic guard that would fit well within the Romar system. The only area I haven’t heard much about is his defensive prowess. He has been said to be able guard the 2 or 3 spot with ease, but haven’t seen enough film of him to back that up.  Given Rainier Beach’s stellar guard classes of the last 8 years dating back to Nate Robinson and the Stewart Twins, I would expect nothing less than a lock down defender.

Off the court, he is an honor student and a smart one at that. Sounds like this kid has a good head on his shoulders. Definitely a Romar kind of player.

How does UW sit in his recruitment?

Hikeem recently did an interview for Rivals where he said he had no clear cut leader thus far. He has doubled his official offers following his showing in Las Vegas. He now has offers from Colorado, UCLA, ASU, Oregon St, Santa Clara, UNLV, WSU, and UW. He is going through the motions of his official visits and is already planning on visiting Colorado, UCLA, Oregon St, and UW. Kansas has been hot on his trail lately and could be his fifth visit if they continue the press on Stewart. Kansas, get used to the name. UW will be battling Bill Self on many of our top recruits: Stewart, Jabari Brown, Kyle Wiltjer and Angelo Chol.

However Stewart did go on to say that “UW is in his hometown so that kind of puts them above everybody.” My guess is that he is UW’s to lose.

Who has UW officially offered?

We all know that Romar has four spots open. He may even take 5 with the assumption that IT will take his chances in the 2011 Draft or another transfer at year’s end.  Let’s look how we currently stand.

We have 9 official offers out according to Rivals and Scout:

  • Tony Wroten
  • Jahii Carson
  • Jabari Brown
  • Angelo Chol
  • Kyle Wiltjer
  • Norvel Pelle
  • Kevin Davis
  • Hikeem Stewart
  • Brent Kingma

Montlake Madness’ Best Guess

PF positions will likely hold priority with the loss of MBA this year. Two out of the trio of Chol/Pelle/Davis will likely occupy two schollies if Davis gets academically eligible and either Chol/Pelle chooses UW in the spring. The third will be a PG to replace Venoy Overton. That race is between Jahii Carson/Tony Wroten (most likely Tony Wroten). The fourth and fifth spot will be given to two out of these four:  Jabari Brown, Kyle Wiltjer, Hikeem Stewart, and Brett Kingma. From everything I have read, Jabari is obviously a top priority but have heard he is slightly leaning toward Kansas, but UW still has a good shot. Hikeem sounds like a more likely candidate to land given his proximity to home and his relationship with Romar. I hear that Kyle Wiltjer has been getting recruited more heavily by UW coaches as of late, but will be tough to land given all the bigger name schools that are after him (Texas, Gonzaga, Kentucky, Kansas and almost the entire Pac -10). Brett Kingma is still fielding offers but ultimately sounds like UW’s to lose as well.

If you stuck a gun to my head today, I would say this will be our 2011 incoming class:

  1. Tony Wroten
  2. Hikeem Stewart
  3. Angelo Chol
  4. Kevin Davis
  5. Brett Kingma

By no means is this my final answer. All for now.

I’d say Jabari Brown has a better chance to end up at UW then Hikeem does.

Agree with your projections for the 2011 class except for Davis. I don’t think he’ll end up being eligible that early. I would gladly trade Kingma for Pelle on this list though.

Thanks for the update. This gets me very excited for the future of UW hoops!

Thanks for the re-cap, I really hope Huskies land Stewart…love it when the local boys stay at home.

The 2011 recruiting class seems too good to be true, that would be awesome if we could get those 5 to sign on the bottom line.

Insider, why do you think Davis won’t be able to be eligible for 2011? What do you know? I sure wish someone could get the straight scoop on Davis, no one seems to know. Would love to clearly understand what it will take this coming year for him to be a Dawg next season.

Need one or two of those 6-9 type guys – big front lines are needed to battle with the big boys from the Big East and ACC…. seems like those teams have 4-5 guys in that 6’8″-6’11″ range that rotate in. I didn’t like the feeling of that GTown or West Vir game last year.
Romar will always get his guards – they fit his style… but to take the next step, we need to keep the front lines stocked.
Loosing Q’s rebounding numbers this year will be big. He was only 6’6″, but a monster on the boards last year.

Davis, I hear, is in an accelerated program to complete his AA degree in a year and a half instead of the standard two years. I don’t know anything for sure….but I just have this gut feeling that Davis is a more likely add for 2012 than 2011 when he qualifies. He has some hurdles to clear.

Also, if things get tight scholarship-wise near the end of the recruiting period (and we don’t have a shortage of incoming big men)……Davis may be the likely casualty of Romar math (Like Roburt Sallie, Harvey Perry, or Charles Garcia). Remember…..Davis hasn’t actually “signed” yet. Coach Dollar had been recruiting him heavily prior to Davis giving a verbal to UW.

Thanks insider. Sounds like Davis could be a real hidden gem from the reports I’ve heard…I hope he can qualify for next year…especially because I agree w/ ddogg on the loss of QPon…Huskies will miss both his clutch inside scoring threat and his rebounding prowess.

Charles Garcia was not a casualty of Romar math…admissions flat out denied him even though he was qualified Romar cried when he had to call him and tell him the news. Thus, I am pretty sure Romar wanted him on the team because he would have been a valuable contributor.

i would be absolutely stoked with your hunch class. 4 of 5 are local kids and there is a ton of diversity. i really hope that scenario comes to fruition.

    GO DAWGS!

    Great piece Craig!!

Davis is up in the air. Those around him believe that he can do it, but whether he does or not is the question. Insider’s take on Davis going to Seattle U like Garcia did is something that I have not heard about, but an interesting story to follow for Seattle U fans. I spoke to some Seattle U guys yesterday and will have quite a bit of news in my next blog posts on mynorthwest.com and huskydigest.com so stay tuned.

One hint is that Mark McLaughlin is the truth. He’s up to 212 lbs. at six-foot-six and can really shoot as well as put it on the floor and create his shot. Clarence Trent is also a big story for them for the fall of 2011. He’s doing well and making noticeable improvements on his game from all accounts.

I think that UW will get Chol and Wroten. Brown is definitely a possibility and though Kansas may feel that they are doing everything they have to to get him, nothing has been set from what I’m hearing in his mind and he will definitely decide after an official to UW.

With the way things are going to Calipari, don’t be surprised in Kansas also gets dragged into the scandal this summer.

Carson will also take a UW visit and is more a possibility for UW than many think in my opinion. Wiltjer has a lot of team after him and I have yet to get a good feel for how much interest he has in UW.

I would say of all of the guys that you listed with UW offers that he is the least likely to sign, but I hope I’m wrong. Jordan Williams, a SF from Texas is also being watched closely by UW and may have also been offered.

I do think that UW will sign 5 players in 2011, between fall and spring, but I do not see Isaiah going to the draft. I think he’ll test the process, but come back for his senior year.

I think that the 5th ride will come from Davis not getting in (he will sign in November), someone transferring (doubtful), a medical casualty (like Zach Johnson) or a 5th year guy moving on after he gets a degree (like Joel Smith and Joe Wolfinger).

I doubt that anyone pays their way, which has been speculated on in the past a lot on different guys since the Tim Morris case.

Good stuff, thanks for the additional comments Jim. I thought both your last mynorthwest.com article and the 8/2 podcast were particularly good.

Keep up the good work. Montlake Madness and your site are the best for updated and accurate Husky b-ball news…i’m grateful to have them.

    im thinking we will get…

    Wroten
    Chol
    Pelle
    Stewart

Of the guys UW has offered or is considering offering, who would top that list?

I really like Jabari Brown from the video I have seen. What are the chances that we land him? How does Hikeem Stewart compare?

  14. craiger’s avatar

I’d have to say Wroten is our top priority. In terms of sheer talent and potential,I think he is the leader on that list.

@Jim basnight: how can IT test the draft waters and come back to UW for his senior year? He already opted for the draft before as a freshman and he reconsidered and came back. I thought you only get to do that 1 time

  16. Jim Basnight’s avatar

    IT never officially declared.
