Slam copyNice little team preview of the Huskies from Slam Online today (yes, I realize that’s not Slam Magazine’s logo to the left — I just have a warm spot in my heart for ’90s hip-hop).

As opposed to a lot of national stories I’ve read about the team, I felt like the guy who wrote this had actually watched the Dawgs play last year.

Small mistake in mentioning Charles Garcia, who will indeed not be playing for UW, but decent little write-up, and really cool to see the Dawgs picked so high!

***

Some fun things planned for this week on Montlake Madness, including a catch-up interview with a former Husky — a blast from the not-so-distant past. But, I’m a fan of suspense, so you’ll have to check back this week to see who I’m talking about…

And, hey, thanks for coming!

sonicsgateThis is only tangentially involved with Husky hoops, but… Since last year’s special Husky season took on such added meaning with the departure of the Sonics, I wanted to pass along this link to a feature-length documentary called Sonicsgate debuting online in October. Here’s the trailer. http://sonicsgate.org/

elite 24 logoNone of the three Husky targets playing (Terrence Jones, Josh Smith, and Tony Wroten) made enough of an impact in the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Classic on Friday to warrant mention in any of the articles I’ve seen about the event, like this one.

Jones is among the top power forwards in the 2010 class. He’s from Portland and Coach Romar is recruiting him along with a bunch of other schools.

According to this message board post, Wroten scored 9, Smith scored 4, and Jones had 8 points in the game which was rained out of Rucker Park and played in the Gauchos gym in the Bronx.

romar mic copyHuskies’ coach, Lorenzo Romar, did a 12-minute interview with KJR Saturday morning and spoke about the incredible experience of winning the Pac-10 last season, including the fact that people seem to remember the last thing a team has done, so he feels like recruits are paying the program a little more respect after last season. He also spoke a bit about the new faces on the team this year. Listen here if you’d like, but here are some of the highlights from his appearance:

  • Coach said he thought Tyreese Breshers would be the best football player of all the Husky hoops guys, but said Venoy would be pretty good as well.
  • Also regarding Tyreese, he said he was healthy now, but had to get into shape.
  • Without mentioning them by name, Coach commented on Tony Wroten and Josh Smith playing football. He said you always have to be concerned about injury, but said he thought it was great to play multiple sports. And, he said football players usually make good defenders in basketball.
  • He called Clarence Trent “a physical specimen,” and a “high-level athlete” who hustles and will provide a lot of highlight reel stuff while at UW.
  • He said C.J. Wilcox can really create his own shot in addition to being a terrific shooter. He said he projects to be a good defensive player, while comparing him to Tre Simmons, another unheralded recruit.
  • Coach Romar called Abdul Gaddy “beyond his years,” both on the floor and off.

Thanks for coming!

Smith Wroten copyUPDATE: Turns ou that since the game was rained out of Rucker Park and played indoors instead, this game will not be aired on ESPN-U today at all. I’ll leave the post up, though, since the sentiment remains the same: Hey, Comcast, how about getting on adding ESPN-U to the Seattle package?

If  you’re lucky enough not to be a Seattle-based Comcast customer and you actually do get ESPN-U, at 4 PM (PST) today, you can watch the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Classic. The game features Smith, Wroten, and 22 of the other best high school ballers in the country.

If you do get a chance to check it out, I’d love to hear from you. From the looks of it, ESPN 360 is not going to show the game, so it really isn’t possible to watch the game if Comcast is your provider in Seattle. Fun.

The game was actually played last night, so don’t Google for more information without expecting to have the result spoiled. When I dig up some information on the results later or tomorrow, I’ll pass them along. Here are spoiler-free rosters and a game preview from Slam Online.

jhol defense copyI’ve been wanting for a while to write about my very favorite player on the Huskies, Justin Holiday. He’s such an easy guy to overlook — hell, he’s not even the most famous basketball player in his own house — but, he just plays the game the right way.

Now, what does that overused phrase mean? I think, for Justin Holiday, the main thing it means is that no one could look at his numbers from last year, without having watched him play, and fully grasp his importance to the team. His most impressive stats were definitely not the ones attached to his own name (2.1 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 44.1% FG pct.).

But, take a look at James Harden’s numbers in the games he played against the Dawgs, in which he was checked almost exclusively by Darnell Gant and Justin Holiday. Although Harden ran roughshod over the Huskies during the Pac-10 tournament, he played two very ordinary games against us during the regular season, both Husky wins. Here are Harden’s numbers against the rest of college basketball, and then against the Huskies:

harden numbers copy

I realize the scoring numbers are close, but Harden was a lot less efficient with J-Hol and Darnell Gant hounding him for the entire game. And, if you take away his 24-point performance in the Pac-10 tournament game, we held him way below his averages in the two Washington wins.

If Gant and Holiday don’t combine for such stellar defense to keep the league’s best player in check, the Huskies might not have won those two regular-season games against the Sun Devils, especially the second one — an absolute thriller — and, maybe we never win the Pac-10.

You also have to respect a guy who can buy into a system that hasn’t yet highlighted him as a scorer while watching his younger brother have more free reign in his one season at UCLA, not quite live up to his hype, and then get drafted in the first round of the NBA Draft. Holiday gives every indication of being that rare player who can leave his ego at the door and do what’s best for the team. Think about the discipline it must have taken from Holiday to spend about sixteen minutes per game on the court last season, and to have never taken more than four field goal attempts in a game. Not once.

And, finally, just watch Holiday on the court. He’s always in the right place, always passing to the right guy, rotating on defense, and (as a reader pointed out recently) showing that he’s got the highest basketball IQ on the team.

While Holiday played more than his 15.6 minutes-per-game average in all three games against the Sun Devils, he was nearly forgotten in the NCAA tournament, playing six minutes against Mississippi State and five against Purdue. If I could ask Coach Romar one question about that Purdue game, it’d be why we didn’t see more Justin Holiday in there to guard 6’4″ Keaton Grant, who dropped three three-bombs on us and grabbed 10 rebounds, going a long way to ending our season.

This year, though, I don’t guess we’ll see Holiday languishing on the bench very often. In fact, he’s a great dark-horse pick to break the starting lineup if the Huskies do wind up playing a smaller lineup with Quincy Pondexter at the power forward spot.

And let’s hope Coach lets him loose a little more this season. Holiday shot so infrequently last year that we really don’t know what he’s capable of on the offensive end. I’m betting this year we find out Justin Holiday’s capable of quite a bit.

isaiah wooden copyBefore we get to the results from part II of the Fan Poll, news is out today that Isaiah Thomas is one of the 50 players named as a preseason candidate for the John Wooden Player of the Year award, and the All-America Team. Brockman made the list last season, which is whittled down to 30 at midseason.

It’s great to see Isaiah getting some national attention. It really is. Last year, I think a lot of Husky fans had that “am I going crazy?” feeling about Isaiah not getting much national attention, until his ESPN appearance made the rest of the country aware of his awesomeness.

***

Strange to hear that Josh Smith and Tony Wroten will play football this year in addition to hoops. They are, after all, just kids. But, jeez, I’ll be holding my breath every time either of those guys gets tackled and puts his future NBA millions at risk.

***

Here’s a quick dunk video of Clarence Trent that I hadn’t seen before.

***

I was astonished at how many of you showed up and voted in Part II of the Husky Hoops fan poll. Turnout for Part I was good, but the number of you that showed up for Part II was f*&$ing heartwarming.

Here’s how you answered the questions, and then, my thoughts on the same questions:

Which guard will start more games this year?

83% of you said “Abdul Gaddy″
17% of you said “Venoy Overton”

My thoughts: I think this is going to be closer than many of us think. I want to believe Gaddy is going to come in and be a poised, error-free point guard, but freshman are nearly always more error-prone, and need to develop poise by gaining experience. I’m going to go with Gaddy here too, but more because I love Venoy as a sixth man energy jolt. But, come crunchtime, I think you’re going to see a lot of Venoy too.

Other than Abdul Gaddy, which freshman will make the biggest impact this year?

66% of you said “Tyreese Breshers”
20% of you said “Clarence Trent”
14% of you said “C.J. Wilcox”

My thoughts: I agree that it’s not going to be Wilcox, because his best case is probably to squeak ahead of Scott Suggs as the team’s fifth guard. Breshers is the pick here, but as I wrote a few weeks ago, I’m very excited about Clarence Trent coming to town.

Statistically speaking, which of these players will show the biggest improvement this season?

40% of you said “Matthew Bryan-Amaning”
35% of you said “Elston Turner”
14% of you said “Darnell Gant”
7% of you said “Justin Holiday”
4% of you said “Venoy Overton”

My thoughts: My next big opinion piece is going to be about Justin Holiday, who I think has such a redonkulous amount of untapped potential he could bring this team to another level. As far as this question, though, statistically-speaking, I think we’ll be in a lot of trouble if the answer isn’t MBA, although I have my serious doubts. I do think Venoy could make a scoring jump, though, balancing the havoc he wreaks on the defensive end with what he does on the offensive side of the ball.

Pound for pound, who is the best player on the Huskies right now?

50% of you said “Isaiah Thomas”
46% of you said “Quincy Pondexter”
4% of you said “Other”

My thoughts: I’m going to go with the small minority here and say that I think Quincy’s game is just more developed at this point. I want to see Isaiah make less mistakes this year, which I think he will. But, when I look at this question, I think of all of the big possessions last year when Coach put the ball in Quincy’s hands and said gett’er did. And, nearly every time, Q-Pon got her done.

Will Quincy Pondexter be used more often as a small forward or power forward this season?

59% of you said “Small forward”
41% of you said “Power forward”

My thoughts: It doesn’t seem to be Lorenzo Romar’s inclination to tinker too much with his starting lineup to suit a certain matchup. (We started our usual five even in last year’s game against Oklahoma State’s four-guard lineup.) So, I think we’re going to see Quincy start at the three-spot. That said, when the match-up does call for it, I think we’re going to see a lot of lineups with two of the smaller guards, Elston Turner/Justin Holiday/Clarence Trent at the three, and Quincy at the four with only one of our three real big men on the floor. These lineups will be fast, defensively inclined, and still adequate on the boards.

Will Matthew Bryan-Amaning average more than 11 points and 7 rebounds per game?

35% of you said “More than 11 ppg, more than 7 rpg”
27% of you said “More than 11 ppg, less than 7 rpg”
20% of you said “Less than 11 ppg, more than 7 rpg″
18% of you said “Less than 11 ppg, less than 7 rpg″

My thoughts: I would be thrilled with an 11 and 7 season from MBA. Last season, recovering from an injury, MBA averaged 6 points and 4 boards. I believe with an additional 10 minutes per game, he can get to the 7 rebounds, but I’m less inclined to believe he can score in double figures. This is a guy who looked at times last season like he had no offensive game at all. He shot 45% for the season despite taking almost nothing longer than a jump hook. And, he looked unfazed at times, not as bothered by his lackluster play as his coaches or teammates.

There’s no one on the team whose ascendance to “star” level would do more for the Huskies than MBA, but I sadly have to say that I’ll believe it when I see it. I’m going with “under 11 points, over seven rebounds.”

Will Isaiah Thomas be among the top three scorers in the Pac-10?

82% of you said “Yes”
18% of you said “No”

My thoughts: I think it’s going to be four guards competing for the scoring crown: Jerome Randle of Cal, Tajuan Porter of Oregon, Nic Wise of Arizona, and Isaiah. That’s my top four in scoring, and I think I.T. will be in the top three.

Will Justin Holiday average more than four field goal attempts per game? (last year he averaged just under two)

57% of you said “Yes″
43% of you said “No″

My thoughts: This was my wishful thinking question. I just believe it’s not possible for someone to play the game so well in every other area while not having some kind of offensive game. I’m going to write plenty more about this soon. Can you tell I’m excited about Holiday?

Which of these players is least likely to be a regular starter for the Dawgs?

51% of you said “Darnell Gant”
28% of you said “Matthew Bryan-Amaning”
21% of you said “Abdul Gaddy”

My thoughts: I do think all three of these guys are going to start, but I’m curious as to why so many people think Darnell Gant is in such danger of losing his starting spot this year. We’ve only got three big men, so I’m going to say the one who started last year is the most safe. I’m going to say MBA is the one who will be pushed by Tyreese Breshers if he doesn’t step it up early on.

Which of these players is most likely to find his way into the regular starting lineup this season?

36% of you said “Tyreese Breshers″
26% of you said “Elston Turner″
23% of you said “Venoy Overton″
11% of you said “Justin Holiday”
3% of you said “Clarence Trent”
1% of you said “Chris Wilcox”
0% of you said “Scott Suggs”

My thoughts: I agree with those of you that picked Breshers. But, I can’t see a scenario in which Elston Turner starts very often unless there’s an injury in the backcourt. He’s going to be our instant offense off the bench this year, but my guess is that he won’t start unless Coach goes with that small lineup where Quincy is our power forward.

Thanks for coming!

nate car copyMaybe he should stick to driving the lane. Nate Robinson was arrested on Tuesday for driving with a suspended license.  He was with Nets’ draft pick Terrence Williams at the time. This isn’t Nate’s first driving related issue either. C’mon man, life’s too good for him right now to mess up over stuff like this. Let the rookie drive, dammit. In fact, make the rookie drive!

The day’s biggest positive news is that ESPN College GameDay is coming to UW on February 20th. The crew will broadcast from here before the 6 PM tip-off with UCLA, which will also be broadcast on ESPN. Pretty great exposure for the school and the team. I kind of wish we could play this game for the rights to Josh Smith. We’d dominate. Just saying.

ESPN says Smith’s stock is slightly down. Hmmm… Okay, no problem. We’ll take him if no one else wants him. Hey, us, yup us, here in the back!

I get a bunch of mail asking recruiting questions about the local HS scene. I’ll have more on that as the season gets closer, but here’s a great ranking of the top 20 high school players in the state by Seatown Sports.

And here’s a ranking of the 10 best fantasy college basketball players in the Pac-10. Three Huskies on the roster, which is awesome. For the record, I think this guy has Tajuan Porter way too low and I would’ve avoided putting Johnny Lawrence on the list at all, even at #10.

And finally, friend me on Facebook if you want updates when I have a new posting up. Just search for Montlake Madness and send me a friend request.

Thanks for coming!

tyreese chuck copyTyreese Breshers has the potential to really help the Huskies this season by adding some of the grit and rebounding that the frontcourt will be missing in the wake of Jon Brockman’s graduation. After redshirting last season with a shin injury, we all hope he can be more of an X-Factor this season than an X-Ray Factor.

If Breshers can be that big presence and give us 15 minutes (or more) of toughness per game, I believe our frontcourt can go from being the team’s weakness to, at least, an area of less exposure.

I caught up with Tyreese for a quick chat this afternoon and he was kind of enough to answer a few questions. Here’s some of our discussion:

MontlakeMadness: How’s the health? Are you back into playing shape?

Tyreese Breshers: My health is good, but at this point I’m not quite back in playing shape. But, I am on the road to getting back into shape.

MM: Glad to hear you’re heading in the right direction. A lot of fans are hoping you’ll be able to contribute to filling the hole left by Jon Brockman. How would you compare your game to his, style-wise?

TB: I can say, physically, I am just as strong as him and I’m good around the basket… And, like him, I like to rebound.

MM: Fantastic. Is the whole team working out together yet? Or are guys still away doing their own things for the summer?

TB: Yeah, we all have been working out together a couple months now.

MM: Nice. Anyone who’s been particularly impressive as far as improvement from last season to now?

TB: Honestly, I can see an improvement in everybody, and I’m not just saying that ’cause it sounds good.

MM: From a fan’s perspective, that’s great to hear. How do you guys handle the idea of competing for minutes on such a deep team alongside the idea of keeping team morale and unity high? Do the coaches encourage competition, or try to keep questions like ‘who’s going to start?’ out of the discussion?

TB: I think that team being so deep is only going to bring out the best in everybody, because we all know that the best players will play.

MM: Other than the Huskies, which team in the Pac-10 is the toughest?

TB: Well we aren’t going to take anybody lightly, but I would say Cal because they beat us twice and they are returning their top 3 guys.

MM: I agree with you. On paper, you guys look so much stronger, but they brought their best last season when they played UW. Tyreese, thanks for your time, man. Before you go, can you tell the fans something they don’t yet know about Tyreese Breshers?

TB: The team calls me “Chuck,” for Charles Barkley.

MM: That’s a very intriguing notion, Tyreese. Thanks so much for your time. I look forward to catching up as the season gets closer.

TB: Anytime.

Thanks for coming!

jerseys copySome tidbits, links, and videos for you today on another off-season Sunday:

Some Jon Brockman stuff:

It’s looking more and more like he’s a lock to make the Kings roster. I was curious and did some (very unscientific) research, and it looks like none of the other big-name second-round picks (Jeff Pendergraph, Jodie Meeks, DeJuan Blair, and Sniveling Poo-head, Chase Budinger) have their jerseys available in their team stores, while Brockman’s is available here.

Also, here are some more nice words about Jon from his new coach.

And, here are a couple of videos:

The first is some Brockman interview footage after one of the Kings’ summer league games.

And here’s some highlights from the Kings/Knicks summer league game. Nothing that highlights Jon specifically, but you can see him a bunch on the court – he played 33 minutes in the game, and grabbed 15 boards.

Josh Smith:

Dreaming of a starting lineup for the 2010/11 season that could be Final Four worthy? This good article on the many high school camps and tournaments going on during the summer in the Las Vegas area mentions that Kentwood senior-to-be Josh Smith has narrowed his choices to just UW and UCLA. He is THE big man prospect in the class of 2010, and getting him would be a coup along the lines of an Abdul Gaddy or a Spencer Hawes, possibly bigger.

Here’s a little Josh Smith footage.

Justin Dentmon and Nars:

And, here’s about a minute of footage from Coach Romar’s basketball camps that have been going on at UW over the past few weeks. Justin Dentmon engages in some mild schooling of a kid named Nars who plays high school ball in South Kitsap.

Reminder that voting is still open in Part II of The Fans Speak Out – Husky Basketball Fan Poll. I’ll keep it open until, probably, Tuesday, and then do a recap similar to what I did for Part I.

And, finally, huge thanks to Bob at the Seattle Times for linking to Montlake Madness on his Husky Hoops blog.

Okay, thanks for coming!
