gloverton realSince we’re still a few months out from the season tipping off, I’ll spend the next few weeks trying to figure out what we can expect from the team during the 09/10 season, and what (and who) will make the difference between another title and a return to the middle of the Pac.

We can be good. Maybe even, very good. But, I’m super-dubious about what I’m seeing in the traditional media regarding expectations for the team next season. After such a successful 08/09 campaign*, there’s bound to be some hype. Seeing the team picked as the 12th, 14th,  or (gulp) 7th best team in the country, though? I just don’t like it.

Such high expectations are no good for a team that’s going to need to get a lot out of a relatively young backcourt. Wouldn’t you rather see guys like Isaiah, Gaddy, Gloverton, and E-trey Turner come out with something to prove, instead of an elite national status based on last year’s success?

And, wouldn’t you rather have our guys looking at what they need to do to wind up atop the Pac-10 again, instead of living up to this arbitrary system of ranking teams based at this point on perception? Coach will do all he can to keep the focus where it needs to be, but it’s human nature to buy into the hype. Just look at Notre Dame or Davidson last year.

I also don’t think these rankings are taking into account how much we’re losing in Dentmon and Brockman, who accounted for roughly a third of our scoring and rebounding last year. Gaddy should be very good, but he’s not expected to be a huge scorer, and as a point guard, probably won’t rebound much. And, I’ll lay out soon why I believe we’ve already seen about 90% of what we can expect from Q-Pon. I’d love to see Gant or MBA make the leap to give us 75% of what Brockman did, but I just don’t see it. Not yet.

Anyhow, let me know what you think. And, hey, thanks for coming…

*Let’s settle one thing right now. Yeah, I’ve heard some of you carping about our “disappointing” showing in the NCAA Tournament against Purdue. Last season, every piece of it, including the disappointing losses that bookended the season, was a total and complete success. A tour de force. A Bruin-stomping, Cougar-punking, Duck-plucking, sweet, sweet symphony. So, we didn’t do something we’ve only done five times ever (reach the Sweet 16). The NCAA tournament is a crapshoot. I’m fired up.

Welcome to Montlake Madness, the only fan-run site devoted 100% to University of Washington Husky basketball. Since we’re just getting started, here are some answers to questions that no one is asking me.

Why start a Washington Husky basketball fan blog?

Like any big fan who wants more information, analysis, and chatter with other fans about his team, I’m trying to be the change I’d like to see in my small part of the world.

In my opinion, there’s really only one good source of Husky hoops content for us more-than-casual fans out there: Bob Condotta’s Husky Men’s Basketball Blog for The Seattle Times. During the season, I want more than any one blog can supply. And, while I’m sure Bob is a fan of the team, covering the team as a professional journalist is his job. He and the rest of the team at The Seattle Times do an awesome job giving us the basics about the team and the news surrounding the Huskies in a straightforward way. I’m the anti-professional.

What are you planning to write about at Montlake Madness?

You’ll get posts about whatever’s happening in the world of Husky basketball from an average, run-of-the-mill fan. When I’m lucky enough to be at Hec Ed for the game, you’ll get that perspective. If I catch a game at the pub, you’ll get my beer-fueled rantings afterward. And if I’m watching from my couch, I’ll probably have a lot to say about the FSN coverage, or the fact that my wife thinks Cal’s point guard looks like Frida Kahlo (right?). So, that’s the perspective you’ll get here.

I’m also going to do my best to fill in the gaps as far as what’s being talked about in the discussion. I’ll give you my perspective on the games, the players, the stats, the recruiting, and give you a chance to make your perspective heard in the comments section. Bring up an interesting point, and maybe I’ll feature it in a post. Let’s start a discussion between the fans.

What year did you graduate UW, and how long have you been rooting for the Huskies?

Funny I should ask. I actually spent my early life in Brooklyn, NY, and went to a small D-III school just outside the city. I sort of rooted for St. John’s as a kid, but didn’t really have a college hoops team growing up. But, I was a huge fan of the game.

A friend took me to my first Husky game three seasons ago (the Spencer Hawes season) — my first year living in Seattle. We beat Cal that night, and ever since I’ve been a pretty intense fan. I haven’t missed watching a game, and what I lack in historical precedence, I make up for with passion and research. Sure, I didn’t watch Detlef or MacCulloch, and I only saw Nate and B-Roy play from afar. But, when it comes to understanding the Huskies in the here and now, I’m your guy. Or, at least, I’m the guy taking the time to write about the team.

So, what now?

I guess it’s time to start blogging the Huskies. I hope you enjoy Montlake Madness.

And, hey, thanks for stopping by.
